I get the same thing today (2020.11.13) - bulk operations are impossible :

I'm running MC on Xubuntu 18.04.
$ mc --version
GNU Midnight Commander 4.8.19
Built with GLib 2.53.4
Using the S-Lang library with terminfo database
With builtin Editor
With subshell support as default
With support for background operations
With mouse support on xterm and Linux console
With support for X11 events
With internationalization support
With multiple codepages support
Virtual File Systems: cpiofs, tarfs, sfs, extfs, ext2undelfs, ftpfs,
sftpfs, fish
Data types: char: 8; int: 32; long: 64; void *: 64; size_t: 64; off_t: 64;
The destination SFTP machine has also Xubuntu 18.04 and:

can't upgrade to a newer LTS.

I'm getting this error while moving *.img files. Almost all other files
are moved without any problems.
$ lsb_release -a

Do you have permissions to read/write those files in those folders?

3.0.3-12 on the server side.
vsftpd is an FTP server not SFTP one.
