          F&F Study Series
          The Incomparable Christ
          Session 5: Later Church Leaders

Our new book study series will continue through August 16.

Paul Dorosh is our teacher. He has previously led us in other successful summer series.

This week's reading assignment in John Stott's book is about 24 pages!

Part II: The Ecclesiastical Jesus (or How the Church Has Presented Him)
          7. Christ the Gracious Savior: Martin Luther
          8. Christ the Human Teacher: Earnst Renan and Thomas Jefferson
          9. Christ the Tragic Victim: John Mackay
          10. Christ the Social Liberator: Gustavo Gutierrez
          11. Christ the Jewish Messiah: N. T. Wright
          12. Christ the Global Lord: Mission in the Twentieth Century

Stott quotes this passage in his introduction to Part II
          • 2 Corinthians 11:3-4 But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning,
              • your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.
            • For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached,
              • or if you receive a different spirit from the Spirit you received,
              • or a different gospel from the one you accepted,
              • you put up with it easily enough.
          He writes
          • "I have tried to assemble some of the main movements of thought in the church, and their representatives."
John Stott is both realistic and gracious in presenting the strengths and failures of church leaders and their teachings
          • His focus in these chapters is on
            • Christ Himself
            • practical application to our own lives
            • how to handle the diverse opinions of our own day
You will benefit more from the series if you get the book, but it's not essential
          • The paperback lists at $20.
          • I bought 46 in all
          • The remaining 13 are on sale at class
          • Cash only, please, $12 or $13 to me or Rohini.
          • Or you can buy locally or online, new or used, or borrow from a library
          • The Kindle version is $10:49 at Amazon.com
          • The ebook is $9.99 at christianbook.com
Incidentally, your book payment will benefit the world! In the postscript of his book Radical Christian (2009) Stott writes
Of course, there are millions of our sisters and brothers in Christ around the world who would dearly love to have books to read to help them grow in their discipleship. Yet they have almost none, while we in the West have more than anybody can read. That is why I have assigned the royalties of all my own books to the work of Langham Literature, to enable more believers and their pastors in poorer parts of the world to obtain good Christian books both in English and in their own languages, and so be strengthened in their faith and their preaching.

Paul's handouts, once available, are accessible at

          F&F on Facebook

          • Challenges, events, scriptures, news

          • request prayer
          • pass on texts, links, pictures and videos that have blessed us.

          Blurred Lines

Citywide's new series  Blurred Lines is addressing topics such as gender identity, equality and biblical sexuality.
          • We will take a look at issues surrounding sexuality that are impacting our world and culture today;
            • issues like homosexuality, pornography, and biblical sexuality.
          • As culture's view of these topics change and evolve
            • we will center our discussions on what the Bible says
            • and how the Church should respond.
          • Gender identity, equality, and sex are the topics of conversations today
            • as our opinions of sexuality are challenged
            • how should we respond?
Sunday, July 19, "The Pastors answer your questions
          • You've texted in your questions, and we want to answer them.
          • Join us as Mike Kelsey, Nate Keeler, and Nyke Gatlin answer your questions about biblical sexuality and gender identity!"
On June 28 and July 5, Dr. Christopher Yuan gave his personal story
          •  and his suggestions for how we can better handle the issue
            •  and the victims of homosexuality

On July 12, Citywide presented Ben Sledge

          • The XXX Church author & speaker led a discussion of pornography
            • from both a scriptural and spiritual standpoint.

We hope to see you this Sunday in class!
