        F&F Study Series
        Discovering God Through The Old Testament
        Session 9
        God's Eternal Purpose

        Wilfred Ju was the lead teacher for this series,
        • His availability was limited by a planned trip, a family wedding, and the sale of their Florida home
        • We've had several substitutes, as indicated above
        • Glenn collier is our teacher for this week.
        Title of Series:  Discovering GOD Through The Old Testament

        Purpose: Through studying portions of the Old Testament, we will seek to understand what GOD says about Himself.

        Goal: Understand who GOD is, so we can:
        • Glorify Him in our worship, in our prayer, and in our life
        • Seek to become more like Him by becoming more like Jesus Christ
        Session 9: God's Eternal Purpose

        Suggested Homework
        • Mark hasn't assigned any homework!
        • I haven't given you much time!
        As covered in earlier sessions, God's eternal  plan centered on the coming Messiah,
        • His substitutionary death for the sin of the world,
        • His resurrection and kingdom,
        • and the transforming power of the Holy Spirit in all believers.
        The plan is described in both testaments
        • Ephesians 1:11-12  In him we were also chosen,
          • having been predestined according to
          • the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will
          • in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory.
        • Ephesians 1:4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world
          • to be holy and blameless in his sight.
        • Ephesians 3:10-11  His intent was that now, through the church,
          • the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms,
          • according to his eternal purpose
          • which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.
        • Psalm 33:10-11  The LORD foils the plans of the nations;
            • he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.
          • But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever,
            • the purposes of his heart through all generations.
        The creation of the universe and the incarnation and death of Christ were all about getting many people with Him forever in heaven
        • Hebrews 2:10  In bringing many sons to glory,
          • it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists,
          • should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering.
        This life is not all there is. The OT Scriptures prove it!
        • Genesis 3:22  The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil.
          • He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.
        • Psalm 16:9-11  Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
            • my body also will rest secure,
            • because you will not abandon me to the grave,
            • nor will you let your Holy One see decay.
          • You have made known to me the path of life;
            • you will fill me with joy in your presence,
            • with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
        • Psalm 21:4,6  He asked you for life, and you gave it to him —
            • length of days, for ever and ever. ...
          • Surely you have granted him eternal blessings
            • and made him glad with the joy of your presence.
        • Psalm 23:6  Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life,
          • and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
        • Psalm 49:7-10  No man can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for him —
            • the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough —
            • that he should live on forever and not see decay.
          • For all can see that wise men die;
            • the foolish and the senseless alike perish and leave their wealth to others.
        • Psalm 49:12  But man, despite his riches, does not endure; he is like the beasts that perish.
        • Psalm 49:15  But God will redeem my life from the grave;
          • he will surely take me to himself.
        • Psalm 139:24  See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
        • Psalm 145:1-2  I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name for ever and ever.
        • Daniel 7:18  But the saints of the Most High will receive the kingdom
          • and will possess it forever — yes, for ever and ever.’
        • Daniel 7:27  Then the sovereignty, power and greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven
            • will be handed over to the saints, the people of the Most High.
          • His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all rulers will worship and obey him.’
        • Daniel 12:2-3  Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake:
            • some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt.
          • Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens,
            • and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.
        So What?
        • Because God is King, in control, and has everything planned, we should trust Him
        • Because heaven is so great, we should live differently now
        And if you have extra time, read Hebrews 11!
        • These people believed that God exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
        • So they lived differently

        Gracia Burnham

        This Sunday, June 14th, Gracia Burnham will be here to share her incredible story.

        • For 17 years Gracia and her husband Martin served with New Tribes Mission in the Philippines.
        • While celebrating their 18th wedding anniversary the Burnhams were kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf Group, a militant group of Muslims.
        • During their 376 days of captivity, they faced near starvation, constant exhaustion, frequent gun battles, cold-hearted murder -
          • and intense soul-searching about a God who sometimes seemed to have forgotten them.
        • On June 7, 2002, in a firefight, Martin was killed. Gracia was wounded, but was freed.
        • You will be inspired by her faith, so plan to be there.
        We hope to see you this Sunday in class!
