Hey all,

Hows it going? I ran a MBBS chat board in 1994. Just starting playing
around with Flash based chat now, tinkering around with building a
flash based chat system, when I thought this might be a great new trick
for an old dog. Do you know if there are any ports of MBBS for Linux
available?

I;ve heard of such a beast, but i have never seen it myself.  I believe it was Major BBS 6 that was ported to linux, none of the worldgroup's.
Sounds like a nice little project though.

I am like you I've herd that it is out their somewere and talk breifly
to
a guy that said he bought "MBBS v6.20 Linux" but he wouldn't part with
it,
in any way, give a copy or anything. I also herd of "WG 1.01 Linux" The
guy sent me a copy and when I looked close at it. I was WG 1.01 for
dos. I
am still looking though... the guys at Net village want a copy also.
Most
of the old stuff thay had gotten from the old Galacticomm was on backup
tape and became corupt and therfor trash.

I have a copy of WG 1.01 for UNIX, which included Linux builds. But
it's for an ancient build of GNU/Linux and would almost certainly
no longer operate today. Plus, the modules for DOS or NT don't work
with it (obviously) and there were never any made for any of the UNIX
builds.

There WAS Major BBS 6.25 for UNIX. That was a port... when they did
WG1, the code was unified and compiled for various platforms with
compiler flags.. pretty neat. The UNIX version was discontinued after
WG1, but the GSBL C code was used to create the Win32 port.

Are there any copies of that source floating around? Since online
communities are starting to flourish once again, I think it would be a
great time to re-introduce the MBBS idea to a new generation...
Certainly their chat engine was a great one. It was the hallmark of my
site. That and multiplayer gaming...it might be worth rewriting the
routines in Java and then building a Flash front end to handle the
interaction.....

They never released a source code edition of that version, which is
completely puzzling. So no, there is no source around. Worse, they
lost the source themselves; I have their source archives.

Is there source available for any MBBS release? At this point I've
moved forward a little and started coding this in java.. The FLASH
front end requires a learning curve that will take me a long time
since I don't have the time to dedicate to learn action script in a
weekend :)
