- Curlewis asserts that
primordial to pre-antral follicle stages CAN occur non-
gonadotrophically and BEFORE onset of puberty
while I suggest in my FQ
that follicles can't grow without menarche having started. I imagine
my explanation is an over-simplication and thus not accurate.
resolution:
- early follicle stages can occur with "gonadotrophic facultative"
capacity (and thus possible before puberty) -> however key consequence
is that many oocytes are aborted leaving females with much fewer
oocytes than what they start with from birth
- growth occurs at a slow rate of up to 200 days --> which highlights
importance of gonadotrophins (LH and FSH) in inducing rapid growth
- he says refer to johnson's essential reproduction. I say, OK!
OTHER important points he made I didn't emphasize in my FQ:
FSH stimulates aromatase, which provides a mechanistic link at the
cellular level to how oestrogen levels increase as a consequence of
gonadotrophic activity
LH levels in follicular and luteal phases are pulsatile, and that
their differences in frequency (high vs. low) indicates the result of
the negative feedback effect that occurs in the luteal phase.
also, in DAY 7 area, I didn't complete my explanation of single
follicle selection, caused by "FSH decrease" <-- which Curlewis says
is related by a further level to the inhibin and oestrogen effect at
this point as well as later on during the luteal phase. It makes sense
if you look at the hormone levels, but I didn't state it explicitly.
Please make the changes in your working notes accordingly, hope this
has been useful.
