I work for the Wa. Dept of Fish and Wildlife in the Marine Fish Science Division.  My group has been working on a project to systematically survey the Substrate/Flora/Fauna associations in Puget Sound, The Strait of Juan De Fuca, The San Juan Islands and The Strait of Georgia.  We have a SeaEye Falcon ROV that we are using to capture video footage and then back in the office manually go through the video footage and transcribe all pertinent data from the video to an Access Database where all collected data is stored.

We are interested in the VARS system and are curious if there are workshops or seminars available that give new comers an introduction to your system and give a chance for questions to be asked and answered about how and if the VARS system is something that we could benefit from in our research.

Or, if you could direct me to a contact person in which I could discuss what systems we are currently using and if they are compatible with the VARS system that would also be greatly appreciated.  We are looking into a more efficient system to transcribe the data from video to a database and yours seems to incorporate both nicely.

Thanks for your time and I look forward to your answer!

Hi Erin,
[…] We have a SeaEye Falcon ROV that we are using to capture video footage and then back in the office manually go through the video footage and transcribe all pertinent data from the video to an Access Database where all collected data is stored.

We are interested in the VARS system and are curious if there are workshops or seminars available that give new comers an introduction to your system and give a chance for questions to be asked and answered about how and if the VARS system is something that we could benefit from in our research.
Currently there's no workshops or seminars. You're welcome to come down to MBARI and I can arrange for some of my time and our video lab staff's time to bring you up to speed on VARS.

You can also download VARS from http://sourceforge.net/projects/vars/files/vars/VARS-6/ and just play around with it. If you run into any issues or questions you can contact me and I'll be happy to help with them.

Feel free to give me a call, my work number is listed below.

Good luck!
