Hi Andy,

On Windows, You'll have the best luck using .MOV containers with an H.264 codec. There's also the added benefit that .MOV files can be 'fast-start enabled' so that they can be read off of a web server by VARS.
> .Re video implementations, I was wondering if you've checked out xuggler? http://www.xuggle.com/xuggler/ It looks like it does require installation of a DLL but it's a GNU license, and it sounds like people like it working with video in Java. It would be cool if we don't have to convert all of our video, but I don't see myself having a chance to dive into Java/VARS/Xuggler anytime soon, and it looks like we're losing minimal fidelity with transcoding (though there is always some degradation :(
I can look into it although we have some very specific requirements for working with video files. For example, we don't work with local files. Instead they're hosted on a web server and reference by URL. Also, we need to be able to read from the movie containers time code tracks. We went with QuickTime for Java because we use the same API to talk to video capture hardware, like Blackmagic Decklink and Kona video capture cards. Going forward, there's a number of new options for working with video filew, including HTML5 and JavaFX. We'll probably evaluate those next year.
