Dear Common Core participants,

I want to thank Diane Sampson for hosting the February 12th meeting at Ohlone School.  The theme was Number and Operations in Base 10.  She shared some interesting resources and strategies she is using in her second grade class.
Here are some of the ideas that were shared on that night:

Number Bonds to Ten Video from the National Centre for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics from the UK.
We loved the line of questioning that the teacher used, and of course listening to the children's adorable british accents.

Diane also shared a game that increases student's math fact fluency that is not competitive.
The game is Top it.  Using a deck of basic playing cards, students take turns to add the two cards.  If they are less fluent, remove the face cards.  If they are more fluent, add them in telling students the values of J, Q, K, and A.

Vivian shared that when students are practicing their math facts, research shows that students are more successful when sandwiching a difficult facts with ones that are easier.

In order to practice fluency in the computer lab, a website called Arcademics was introduced.  http://www.arcademics.com/games/
Diane showed us a game called Koala Carts that help students identify numbers using a ten frame.

Tammy shared that Jo Boaler would be repeating the Stanford Online course that she led last summer. Register at this link https://class.stanford.edu/courses/Education/EDUC115N/How_to_Learn_Math/about
We had a discussion about different courses that were available, and Judith pointed out that she listed them on the front page of the MBAMP website.

We also had a discussion about sentence frames that could be used with students disagree with their classmates about the solution to a problem.  Some ideas were:
I was thinking about it this way_________________.
I disagree with the solution because______________.
We also thought it would be useful to ask students what they would want to hear when they make a mistake.

At the end of the meeting, Tammy shared a couple ideas to use with primary students.
1. The ten frame paddles from EAI.
2. Cookie magnets on a cookie sheet.  She printed out cookie pictures on a special magnet paper and used tape to make a ten frame.  Tammy said that this was very effective in engaging kids.

The next meeting will be held at San Lorenzo Valley Elementary in Janet Stahl's 1st grade classroom on March 12th 6:30-8:00.  The topic will be Measurement and Data.  Bring your ideas on teaching this content strand to your students.  All are welcome!

Also, there are still a few places available for the March 15th Spring Conference.  For details and registration link, go to http://mbamp.ucsc.edu/

Thank you all for participating!

Michelle,
Thank you for your excellent summary of the evening. I enjoyed sharing and
collaborating. Google Maps failed, however. Ohlone was at the Pajaro
Middle school site over 15 years ago!
