Hello Math friends!
I am writing to remind you of our December Common Core Math Strategies meeting.  The meeting will be held this Wednesday, December 10 at San Lorenzo Valley Elementary in Room 1.  The meeting is 6:30-8:00.

Because it is a Make and Take session, I need to know how many of you plan on attending, so I can make sure that I have enough supplies.
Please send me an e-mail at voor...@ucsc.edu to RSVP.  (No need to reply to the group.)

I am looking forward to hearing more about this strategy, and make some for my students.
Please let me know if you have any questions!

Hope to see you Wednesday!

I can't make it again , but with good reason! I will be presenting a breakout session for grades 2-3 at our district math night being held at Rio Del Mar. See you soon!

Grrr. Gault has their holiday craft night so I won't be able to make it. It has been too long since I have been with you all. I miss you people!

Dear Math Friends,
It looks like we are going to cancel tomorrow's Rekenrek session due to low attendance.  There are several events happening at our teacher's schools and districts tomorrow, and it looks like a storm is coming in!

We will plan on incorporating the Rekenrek making into one of our other sessions planned for the year.  As usual, there is no meeting in January.  Our next meeting will be on February 11 at Soquel Elementary in Room 1.  Denise Henry will be presenting Re-Engagement strategies.

Feel free to use this Google Group to share exciting things that are happening in your classroom!
I have been using a Bridges unit on Measurement, and my students are fired up!  They are doing a lot of hands on measurement with non-standard units like teacher feet, giant feet, color tiles, and paper inchworms.

I will be moving into difference problems soon.  Anyone have some great CGI problems written for 2nd grade?  You can share them here, and we will all be able to see them.

Looking forward to hearing from you all!
Michelle Voorhees

Hi, I'm thankful you've decided to cancel. I was worrying about
folks getting stuck or just a few die hards who don't really need
rekenreks. Thanks,
Janet

I posted the cancelation on the website.  Sorry it is not happening, but if this storm comes it could have been a drag.

Hello Math Friends,
I am back from my time working in Paris and back to work at UCSC.  I started out the first week of the quarter (last week) going in to Julie’s 5th grade class and doing a lesson that started with a kind of number talk and ended in a math game.
You might want to try it.
I plan coming 1 time a week to this class for the rest of the winter and spring quarter, about 19 weeks.
This was the first time I had met them.
We started with the class brainstorming everything they knew about math.  They started slow but we got quite a list.  I knew I wanted to end up talking about the # 25 as I listened to their shares and recorded them on the white board I kept hoping of an opportunity to guide them in to the number 24.
The Number Talk format is kind of amazing and sure enough one student said factoring.  I asked the class to give me some examples and on student said “well like 3x4x2=24 so 3,4,2, are the factors of 24.  Well we were off from there. We stitched into a number talk about the number 24 and ended up playing the 24 game.
I have to say this format pushes my comfort zone and I have always been more controlled in my lessons, but it is fun and it seems to get you where you want to go most of the time and when you don’t get there you get somewhere interesting.

I can post a more detailed lesson plan if you all are interested.  Just let me know.  I go back to the class today, I will let you know how it goes.

Judith

Judith,
That sounds so fun and engaging. It sounds like a great way to lead into 24. Good times! I'm definitely interested in your plan.

Bravo for pushing your envelope.  When there is rich discussion you often uncover some partially known information or misinformation.  In kindergarten today, I think I'll ask "what do you know about math.
Happy day,

Janet,
I wonder how often kids get asked that?
