Dear teachers,
Our next meeting of the Common Core Math Series will meet on Wednesday, November 4th.  We will meet at the Santa Cruz County Office of Education in the Board Room.  Please join us for a discussion of Fractions, and how we can make sense of them for all grade levels including the primary grades.

Also, mark your calendars for December 9th.  That will be our last Common Core meeting of the school year, as the leadership team devotes their time to planning the summer institute.

Hope to see you there!

HI all,
Thanks to everyone who came to last week's CC Strategies meeting.  Despite a late start, we had a great discussion and had time to share out what's working and what's not.  Because of a short meeting, we decided to move our "Making Sense of Fractions" presentation to our December 9th meeting.  Hope everyone can make it.  December 9 will be our last meeting of the school year, as the leadership team will be beginning to plan the summer institute.

I appreciated Tammy's insight into giving the first CGI problem of the year in a variety of classrooms.  Her strategy for observing the kids and noting their strategies and behavior tendencies is helpful, and I think it will help me bring my CGI to the next level.  I feel comfortable writing problems, unpacking, sharing out, but I've never given mini-lessons to "late starters."  I am looking forward to trying this strategy this week. Thanks Tammy!

Mia brought up the broader topic of a logical progression in the work of fractions.  We talked about starting with equal share problems and building fraction number sense with the younger kids.  I believe we will be continuing this conversation at the next meeting.  Thanks for bringing it up!

Please feel free to use this forum to ask each other questions or share your successes!
See you next time!

Hello My Dear!

I am so sorry that I haven't been able to attend the classes this semester.  I am a leader at my church and they changed the Bible Study days to Wednesday evenings...so unfortunately I have been committed to this for a long time now, and couldn't get out of it.  I am sure the classes have been wonderful.  I have been going to many different conferences lately for CGI.  They have Louanne and I working with the new teachers this year--me at BCE and Louanne at SLE.  I sure wish you were part of it too.  How are you?  Did you get a position this year?  I know that you will do wonderfully anywhere.

Take Care and say hi to everyone for me.  I really do miss you all.

Suzanne

Awww. I'm sad you won't be doing "Next Steps in CGI: Analyzing and Sequencing Student Strategies for Solving Word Problems." I didn't come to the November fractions meeting because I didn't need it (second grade) so much. Was really looking forward to the next one. See you next year then...
