I hope you had a restful Thanksgiving weekend! Our November meeting focused on the content strand: Counting and Cardinality. Our host, Raven, talked about her classroom routines and activities related to this strand:
1. "Munch, Munch, Math," where she uses food, like fish crackers to count and solve problems.
See links here:
2. Calendar- focusing on teens being ten and more.
3. Solve a Problem (CGI Story Problems), which is one of Gault's school rules. Raven shared that at first, she records everyone's thinking on one sheet. Later in the year, she records individual responses.
4. Games. Raven shared that she has been doing games every Friday with the help of many parent helpers and MBAMP director, Judith Montgomery. 1/2 of the class plays a game that is from the math program (Investigations), and 1/2 of the class plays a classic board game, like Parcheesi, Dominoes, or Sorry. The Dominoes that are used have up to 12 dots on them. This helps with number recognition.
After Raven shared, we broke out into grade level groups.
Our December meeting is right around the corner. On Wednesday, Dec. 11, we will meet in Chris Smith's classroom at Vine Hill Elementary in Scott's Valley. The meeting starts promptly at 6:30 and ends at 8:00. We will be discussing the next content strand, Operations and Algabraic Thinking.
Hope to see you there!
