The windows System Restore Wizard can be extremely useful when you need to reverse changes or settings made to your computer that may be problematic. If the system can't boot normally, but you can get into safemode, you can still launch the wizard from there. But there are times your computer can be so corrupted that even safemode doesn't come up. This article describes how to perform a very rudimentary, low-level system restore manually (without the wizard), offline, and without the need for Windows to boot.
First you need to access the filesystem. The easiest way to do this is to use a CD or DVD bootable OS. This could be a Windows PE type disk such as bartpe, reatogo, or hiren. Or even a linux flavor such as knoppix.
After performing the above steps, you have essentially performed a system restore manually (or at least a major portion of it - the registry), without the assistance of the restore wizard. When your computer comes back up, if you still have issues, you may need to recover an older set of system files from "C:\System Volume Information" as described in step 4. If that doesn't help recover your OS to a bootable state, there's a good chance the system restore wizard wouldn't have been able to help you even if you could have accessed it. You can restore your backed up files from step 3 to go back to the "original" corrupt state, or just reinstall the OS if that's what your plan is.
Restoring the registry can be a huge help to many PCs that won't boot... I've played around a little with Windows 7 (and to a lesser extent Vista), and I've been pleasantly surprised that their repair options finally include system restores. Regardless, for XP etc... this can be handy... let alone all the times having a pre boot environment is handy for file restoration. Thanks!
Wow! This little gem saved the day again! Kept me from doing a reinstall or repair/recovery, anyway. I was given a tower running XP that picked up the AV360 rogue antivirus. It wouldn't boot even in safe mode so I loaded into Reatogo XPE and cleaned up the obvious. Then it would boot, but still crashed after about 20 seconds...not long enough for me to load my usual utils to remove the startup hookstraps.

I was unable to log into XP at all (saying I had a missing or corrupt file). I checked the drive using UBCD4Win, drive was good. Did this, rebooted, computer started right up. Worked similar to a system restore, but I was unable to access system restore.
I just went through this process on Windows 7. System Restore was not working for me due to a System Protection error. I navigated through my file system using ubuntu, which I had previously loaded onto my computer. I followed the above advice exactly, except that my recovery files were in C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack, and had the same names as the actual files (Default, Sam, Security, Software, and System). When I re-booted, I selected the option to "start Windows normally", and while booting up seemed to take longer than usual, everything otherwise seems normal. I hope this helps Windows 7 users!

The MOA LiveCD will never be available as a full Download - you will have to built it yourself.
The main ingredient to the MOA LiveCD is the VMware Workstation.
At the moment I find it easier to build this based on Bart's PE.
Maybe on a future version I will also built based on Puppy Linux ...
I have already built some Plugins for Bart's PE - but I found that many
users had their problems to reproduce this on their own.
That is the reason why I now change to a more complete approach.
The first release of the MOA Live CD will come with a BartPE standalone-plugin.
You will only have to add your selection of drivers and your Windows-source CD
and a fresh download of Bart's PEbuilder.
As it is possible to have multiple BartPE-builts on one CD I plan to add more options like:
WS 4.5.2 , VMplayer ,WS 5.5 ...
All this variants can be added as a RAMloader-version as well.

If you enter for example 16gs the startup.bat extracts a prepartitioned virtual disk to C:\ and mounts it so that it transparently replaces the usual Ramdrive. This safes a lot of RAM - RAM that you can better use for your guests or to load BartPE into it.

přesto bývají biosy počítačů vybíravé, a je třeba zkoušet nastavit usb-hdd, usb-zip aj. - takže neoblíbené médium, a raději v práci nosím po kapsách bootovací cd.
Nevím jak historické verze ATI, ale novější už v pohodě umí vytvářet přímo bootavelný USB disk, stejně jako CD nebo DVD, za předpokladu, že ti to podporuje tvůj HW. Měl jsem doma postarší SD kartu 128MB, tak jsem ji využil pro vytvoření boot verze ATI, kvůli nutnosti případné obnovy na mém netbooku, kde není DVD/CD mechanika a nechtělo se mi kvůli tomu investovat do externí mechaniky. Je zde ale jedna záludnost, kdy ATI v pohodě zapíše všechny soubory, ale při pokusu o nabootování z karty to končilo vždy chybovou hláškou i když ATI provede nejdříve její zformátování. Tak jsem se naštval a udělal jsem nejdříve formátování pomocí utility HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool a pak teprve vytvořil pomocí ATI bootovatelné médium znova a pak to teprve začalo bez problémů fungovat. Tuhle utilitku jsem používal už v době kdy jsem dosti laboroval s BartPE a reatogoXPE a tahle utilitka mi mnohdy pomohla, proto jsem si na ní vzpomněl, takže to vyzkoušej a pokud nemáš problém s HW, mělo by to normálně fungovat. Nejdříve si vyzkoušej pomocí zmíněné utility jestli ti vůbec funguje boot z USB média.

HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool znám, ten sem taky zkoušel a jak píšeš, pod Win sem zapsal soubory na flashdisk, ale při bootování to hodilo chybovnou hlášku (karel by se zeptal jakou), něco jako MBR helper není k dispozici.
Zkoušel sme FAT 16, FAT 32, a nejenom HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool. Utilit na formátování sem zkusil několik.
Dám to mu čas a vrátím se k tomu s čistou hlavou ...
Pokud ti je HW schopen nabootovat z USB, pak buď někde děláš chybu nebo je nějaký bug u verze ATI, kterou používáš. Já jsem to dělal kdysi ještě z postarší verze 9.0, kde už to funguje, sic trochu byl problém s formátováním SD karty.
Postupoval jsem podle návodu _s yslinux.html, na který odkazoval Karel a zadařilo se. Karle díky ... sice sem to na začátku četl, ale ...
Z 2 GB FAT32 (FAT32 je podmínkou) flashdisku to hezky bootuje.

TeutonPE - Kolejna modyfikacja BartPE, inspirowana projektem PortableApps.com. Ideą jest stworzenie bootowalnego nośnika CD/DVD/USB kombinującego środowisko PE ze zbiorem aplikacji portable, które mogą działać w płaszczu Windows, Wine, ReactOS i "własnym" bez żadnego systemu operacyjnego. Domyślną powłoką graficzną i menu jest shell BB4Win, a konsekwencją jest atrakcyjna wizualnie "plansza" i dostępność skórek. Ta natywna wtyczka graficznego interfejsu może zostać wyłączona na rzecz używania starej powłoki Nu2Shell czy XPE. Wszystkie wtyczki TeutonPE są kompatybilne z BartPE i XPE. Aplikacje proponowane w TeutonPE to odpowiedniki open source, więc znajdziemy tu takie klasyki jak np. GIMP, czy program do tworzenia kopii zapasowej partycji ODIN. Wytworzony materiał może być stosowany na dwa sposoby: jako nośnik bootowalny ze środowiskiem PE w rodzaju wyżej opisanych, lub jako zwyczajny nośnik uruchomiony spod działającego Windows (z zakresu od Windows 9x aż do Windows 7) i dający dostęp do wszystkich zintegrowanych programów. Po uruchomieniu tego spod Windows powłoka Windows Explorer "znika" zostając zastąpiona powłoką płyty, ale bez paniki - z prawokliku na ten nowy Desktop otrzymamy dostęp do TeutonLive Menu oraz możliwość wyłączeniania całości i opuszczenia systemu (Exit > Quit TeutonLive).
