We reconvene this month following our annual holiday break. We hope you all had pleasant holidays. Here are a few community updates for discussion at our next meeting:
Our November meeting focused on continuing efforts with Mayfair Park Advisory Council to develop a memorial garden in Mayfair Park to recognize and celebrate the many years of tireless community service by Wally Eliasen. Improvements have been installed, including log benches, with a celebratory event to be scheduled once things warm up.
Our Day of the Dead celebration scheduled for November 1 in Triangle Park, featuring Ballet Folklorico de Mexico and author Rebecca Wu, was cancelled. Just before the date, numerous disruptive ICE raids were conducted, including one at a children’s Halloween parade in Irving Park where tear gas and other dangerous crowd suppression efforts were employed. Discussion with performers, the 39th Ward and Mayfair Park Supervisor Lisa Dolan resulted in unanimous decision to re-schedule the event to protect all involved. We would like to discuss a new date and location at our meeting.
Our Annual Party was held on December 11. It featured a dance performance by Thwack Dance Company in Mayfair Park Fieldhouse, followed by drinks at the Irish American Heritage Center.
Kemora Landscaping, which installed plantings and stone walkways for the memorial garden in Mayfair Park, is considering acquisition of the now vacant Ralph’s Marine property on Lawrence just west of Marie’s. They would use this location to complement their existing facility at Lawrence and Knox.
X Sports on Elston Avenue closed following an extended period of operational difficulties. The chain was acquired by LA Fitness, which has a facility at Foster and Cicero.
The vacant building at 4518 W. Lawrence Avenue was recently purchased by the owner of Clark Street Sports, located just next door. The owner, Jason Caref, has been very active in Mayfair since Clark Street opened and has been a key part of revitalization along Lawrence Avenue. They plan to replace the existing building with a new, modern one as a mixed-use property featuring street- level retail and residential units above, consistent with other properties on Lawrence Avenue.
