Happy New Year!

As you may recall our office submitted a traffic study to the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) for the intersection of N. Elston Ave. and W. Leland Ave. following a pedestrian-involved incident reported to our office on October 21, 2025.

Our office just received CDOT’s recommendations, and I have outlined the changes below that will be coming to the intersection.

CDOT evaluated the existing signage on Elston. CDOT recommends installing school pedestrian crossing signage on Elston and Leland to emphasize to drivers the location of crosswalks where pedestrians may be crossing. CDOT also recommends installing cross traffic does not stop signs underneath the stop signs on Leland. This will emphasize to drivers that traffic on Elston is not controlled by a stop sign. This recommendation is shown on the attached drawing and has been forwarded to the appropriate CDOT personnel for implementation.

CDOT also recommends installing paint and post bump-outs on the southeast and southwest corners of the intersection of Elston and Leland. Paint and post bump-outs are used to improve sight lines, reduce turning speeds, and narrow the unprotected crossing distance for pedestrians. Aldermanic menu funds will be used for the implementation of the bump-outs and have been sent to CDOT personnel for implementation.

If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Kindly,

Sam B.
