At our May 14 meeting, members from the Irish American Heritage Center provided a power point presentation, followed by an open question and answer period, detailing IAHC’s Outdoor Patio Proposal.   A copy of the power-point presentation was posted in our members’ notice prior to the meeting.

The IAHC team included: Eileen Vesey, Executive Director; Tom Herion, Irish Hall of Fame President; Dominick Owens, VP; William O’Donoghue; and James McGing.

The team expressed their appreciation for the long-term support received from the Mayfair community.  They emphasized their continuing commitment to serve as an exemplary community member providing valuable resources to all.

The Patio Proposal envisions an extension of the dining and hospitality opportunities provided in the Fifth Province Pub, located at the south end of the building. The Proposal contemplates substantial additional investment in and improvement of the Center. A 25’ by 32’ Patio would provide ground level space for approximately 24 to 28 persons to enjoy food and drink in a cozy, sheltered environment.  It would operate during the warm portions of the year between late Spring and Fall. It would be managed and overseen by existing IAHC management personnel and servers that run the Fifth Province. It would provide substantial additional revenue that would help underwrite and expand the wide range of activities offered at the Center.

The Proposal was supported by the vast majority of those attending the meeting and by responses received from members following our post-meeting mailing requesting comments. IAHC is filing for a zoning amendment to C-1 which will enable operation of the outdoor Patio. The amendment will be temporary. It will continue for a one-year period beginning with the City Council approval date.   This is intended to provide IAHC sufficient time to complete the construction and licensing of the Patio.  Once the Patio is open and operating, Alderman Nugent will introduce an amendment to return the zoning classification of the IAHC to its current R-3 zoning, with the Patio area grandfathered under the C-1 zoning, restricting future changes in building use to that within the current R-3 use.

Thanks to PEBA and SSA 79 for their work in maintaining a clean and inviting environment along our commercial streets, and for the replacement of 19 trash receptacles along the way.   They also recently completed summer planting installations and will soon install two bike fix-it stations on Elston Avenue to provide tire refilling and repair support to our many cyclists.

Please member that PEBA’s free monthly Concert Series kicks off with The Wayouts at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 18, in the parking lot of Clark Street Sports, 4506 W. Lawrence Ave.

Many thanks to the Laborers’ International Union of North America for their generous gift of $500 in support of MCA activities.

Thanks to those of you who have sent in your annual donations of $10 per household. If you haven’t done so yet, you can send payments to: Mayfair Civic Association, c/o Ron Duplack, 4731 N. Knox Avenue, Chicago, IL 60630.

Thanks to Jeff and Anne Wentz for taking over maintenance of several community gardens.

Please let us know if you have any space where we might store the mower used for our public spaces.  Please also let us know if you are interested in volunteering to support our membership and outreach programs.
