Other than generating lower resolution versions of these textures and
setting up switches to point to the low resolution textures during
animation and high resolution textures during rendering (which I'll be
doing anyway)...
...are there any other settings or tools built into Maya that can deal
with this situation? Tips or techniques that any of you have
implemented in similar situations?
I'm all ears (eyes, actually).

P.S. Project is being done in Maya 8.5 (don't ask). However, don't let
this stop you from suggesting techniques that you've used in later
versions of Maya.
