Working on a project where lots of large texture files need to be
loaded and visible in the viewport while animators work. Things are
starting to get slow.

Other than generating lower resolution versions of these textures and
setting up switches to point to the low resolution textures during
animation and high resolution textures during rendering (which I'll be
doing anyway)...

...are there any other settings or tools built into Maya that can deal
with this situation? Tips or techniques that any of you have
implemented in similar situations?

I'm all ears (eyes, actually).

Cheers,

-DW

P.S. Project is being done in Maya 8.5 (don't ask). However, don't let
this stop you from suggesting techniques that you've used in later
versions of Maya.

Can you simply limit the resolution displayed?

There's a setting in shaders for hardware display (at least Maya shaders). Not sure whether this actually prevents the entire image being loaded into RAM and is simply a display setting though...

It's a bit hard to know how to answer this without knowing more about why textures needs to be shown during animation though.

We tend to turn the hypershade update off. Basically made a toggle
button for it
