if you set a texture path to

/jobs/thisjob/myproject/sourceimages/texture.exr

maya will detect its in the current project path, and happily change it to

sourceimages/texture.exr

I'd rather it didn't. any way to disable this behavior? i could move the textures outside the project, or move my project, but both feel like silly workarounds, I just want this magic behavior to be disabled.

evil hack in the workspace.mel will force you to use absolute serch paths :)

workspace -fr "sourceImages" "mynonexistenlocation"

that should work, in theory until Maya changes the workspace.mel file...

This has been an annoyance for the last 10 years, at least, and invariably causes headaches any time you're working outside of Maya's potted project space paradigm (which in production seems to be basically always).

I've never tried Stefan's suggestion, but honestly the best and ONLY straightforward way of dealing with file texture paths is the tried and true File Texture Manager script (attached, just in case).

Why the functionality of this awesome little script wasn't integrated into Maya natively in about 2004 is one of the world's many great mysteries.

I agree, very annoying.

At my studio I force every machine to set project to a local cache directory and use script for opening/saving/texture and pretty much everything.

But there are still some other stuff that only works if you set project correctly... particle cache for 1 thing, you can't use absolute path for it.

Come on: It only took 10 years to make it true:

File Path Editor

You are now able to manage file paths with Maya 2014 with the new File Path Editor. This will list path information for your files, including referenced files, and even displays a resolving status icon, indicating file path issues. You are able to resolve path issues quite easily from here, using the RePath window, or using the replacement string tool. This will allow you to search and replace elements selected in the browser window.

It certainly looks like 2014 has some great new features.

It's kind of amusing though that he cites the "Ideas for Maya" forum at Autodesk, since I see very few small "fixes" in this list of features. The stated purpose of that forum was to list small annoyances with Maya's workflow, not about BIG NEW FEATURES (although it was amusing to see some of the stuff that got votes, like "Hey how bout adding a button that turns a Word doc into an animation?") As usual, this release is all about adding new and sexy bells and whistles. Not that some of them won't be very welcome.

Of the few suggestions I made at the Autodesk forum, among them was FIXING RENDER LAYER BREAKAGES. There is, predictably, no mention anywhere of this unless it's buried inside something else. Of course there are many other similar bugs in Maya that have been around for years and which cause regular users like me to lose endless hours of production. Apparently, this is no more interesting to Autodesk than it was interesting to Alias Wavefront.
