Any interesting/simple/quick/free solutions welcome.  It crops up time and again and I don't think the creative industry is quite finished with that 'paper look' just yet.

Someone over on the python-inside-maya group just posted a script for something similar, it generates joints aligned to poly edges, then rolls/folds them up in strips.

Also found this reference on the SOuP forums, but the general vibe seems to be 'doing it by hand is easiest'.

I worked on an amaaaazing origami ad at the mill many years ago, the rigging and anim team just brute forced their way through some of the trickier transitions. One of the nicest things I ever worked on, then the client hated it and it never aired. :/

I saw you guys working on that ad, it was *awesome*. But yeah, just good ol' fashion brute force!

Ha! Thanks for the links Matt. I had posted the topic on the soup forums in search of inspiration some time back and that's what I came across too -  straight old brute force method seems to be the quickest way to go about it.

All inspiration is good inspiration. :)

Staying true to my broken record, grass-is-greener attitude, here's a quick show-off demo in houdini...

...and an intriguing look at the UI for it. Doesn't show how it works under the hood, but good for stealing ideas if you wanted to re-implement it in soup (or houdini)

While looking for that one, found this other demo done in ICE. This chap appears to be happy to give away his setup if you ask him nicely.

Cheers guys.  I'm a big advocate of doing things manually as much as possible.  Seeing as you can't script what or when a client will change his mind. ;)

Awesome video Matt!
And I think Keith is right, working with clients is just too lose, you can't afford to follow the linear path unless you are 100% certain that client wants just a quick job and isn't really much picky.
