Hi Ian,

Is it normal for any of the attributes on a replicator node to affect the original network instead of the replicant(s)?

I have a pretty simple radial network with some oscillating cubes and just want to replicate this and offset it/add some variation, like I've seen (I think) in some tutorials. However some of the attrs on the replicator node seem to affect the original network and not the replicator, e.g. adjusting "Pattern Rotation" will cause the original and not the replicant to rotate.

Setting the number of replicants to 0 seems to have some strange effects -- I would expect this to be the same as turning the node off, but it seems the original network is still affected by some of the attributes on the node.

Time machine offset doesn't seem to do anything. At first I thought this was because I was using an instancer network, but converting it to Mesh type had the same result. It sort of seems like MASH isn't quite sure which set of objects to apply the values to......

Hey Steve,

Yes thats normal, the Replicator takes over your network, so it’s allowed to modify the original points (using pattern etc). So turning the Replicants to 0 isn’t the same as clicking the ‘Enabled’ button (hence why there is an Enabled button ;).

Sadly the Replicator time machine was broken by the changes needed to enable the reordering of MASH nodes (in the MASH editor), we’re aware of it though.

It is however, much more powerful and faster to control this kind of thing without the Time Machine anyway (it’s horrendously slow), just by using a map to trigger some local space Y offsets (in the Offset node). Then you can build up a shading network to control the variation. It all depends on the final effect you’re after.

Nesting MASH networks also works with the Time node if you want to get an effect like the Time Machine (Repro networks only though).

Feel free to send a scene (off list) or some mockups if you need any more help.
Best,
Ian

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the clarification -- I guess I'd misunderstood the Replicator as being solely for, well, replicating 😃

Didn't realize it also affected the original network in that way.
