Maya to Max transfer?

I've been asked if we can output a scene that's been lit and textured in Maya 2015 over to Max for another artist.

I see there is now a "Send to 3DS Max" feature in Maya, although it only shows up in the menu set if you have Max installed, which I currently don't. So I can't test this.

But in any case I'm wondering how well this feature is going to port across Vray materials and lights from Maya to Max, if at all? The docs state that materials can be transferred but don't explicitly mention Vray.

Anyone have any experience with this? Of course the non 3D artists in the chain of command want this file to magically transfer from one 3D application to another with all bells and whistles intact 😉

Hi Steve,

we only do it the other way round: Max -> Maya. My colleague wrote some basic scripts to bring over the VRay materials (Blend, 2sided etc. doesn’t convert). The Glossiness value made some trouble if I remember correctly.

Don’t think that there is any way to get a Maya/Vray scene into Max/Vray without some hand work.

Best,
Lars

Try VRScene export/import that comes with Vray in both maya/max.  The trouble is many of the shaders for lights, etc...are different between the max/maya version of vray under the hood even though the parameters all look the same.

Thanks for the replies on this. If nothing else it's always good to hear from other people in the trenches that I'm not madly wide of the mark when telling producers things aren't as easy as they think &#X1f609
