Anyone got any recommendations for a good Maya friendly laptop?

Doesn't have to be superpowered, but capable of running the app and the UI smoothly.

Email me off list if you prefer.

Thanks!

myself and several others are super happy with the asus g73/g74. its a gaming laptop, but runs maya happily, good value compared to similar offerings from other companies, but the big selling point for me is that its nearly silent; most other workstation/gaming laptops sound like a dc-10 engine with a head cold.

of course, you could get a horrible tokyo drift inspired neon monstrosity. phin, care to chime in?

Thanks Matt.

The only OS option I see for this is Windows 7 Home Premium. No issues running Maya on that?

I'm running maya on a g74 too and absolutely love it! It's fantastic with a machine that is near quiet.
I had concerns about the w7 home premium too, but there hasn't been any issues so far.

Do note though, I imagine that you already know but it's a "portable" machine. Nothing that you easily just throw down in any bag.

OK, still not recieved it yet but apparently the Alienware MX18 is pretty silent.

I had a look at Asus G74SX , a very nice machine and it was definately my second choice.

But, core i7 2960XM overclocked , dual nvidia 580m in SLI, and 18" screen,  whats not to like :)

OK, maybe overkill for Maya but not for Battlefield 3 :))

32GB of 1300MHz Ram with the option to upgrade to 1600 (16GB) or 1866 (only up to 8GB)

Also USB 3, HDMI and a Killer Wireless_N 1103 card.

Personally, I'm partial to a bit of Neon :))

Actually a portable desktop replacement is exactly what I'm after!

Thanks everyone for all the feedback.

OK, NOW I'm looking at getting a new laptop. ;)

The Asus G75VW certainly looks pretty good for the money. Anyone running Maya on that and have any feedback?

Best Buy at least apparently only does offer Windows Home on it (why this would be on a high-powered machine is beyond me).... any problems with that? I traditionally always run a million miles from the namby "Home" version of Windows, but for a laptop I guess I could live with it if it isn't going to make me want to break things....

The specs look the same as for my G74. I've been running maya on it daily for a year or more now. It's a great machine!
The only thing that I've found is that sometimes I need to go with the geforce drivers asus provides. The drivers from nvidia has caused minor issues for me some times.

Windows home as not been a problem at all! I haven't seen a difference from the ultimate version on my stationary. But then again I don't go deep in the windows environment.

I came to think of one thing to be aware of. I don't know the monitor outputs from the G75 but if you plan on running external monitors with higher res than 1920 you might need to investigate further. The HDMI output from at least my G74 is locked to max 1920. The VGA output can go up to 2048 but it's not as crisp as you'd like.

These guys build pretty beasty laptops as well. I've had one for a year now and its run without a hitch. I used to own one of the Asus models mentioned, and the metabox one is a little noisier, but it is built much better. Trackpad is rubbish though and it doesn't have a backlit keyboard....newer models do however.

I'm in the US so buying from Australia probably not on the cards...

Thanks for the feedback though. I feel a purchase coming on....
