Just checking; we've been using alembic to store unconnected points for a while now (think like a frozen frame of particles) from houdini to houdini, or houdini to our renderer, all works great, can load 2 million points within seconds.

Assumed it'd work with Maya too, having left maya locked up for 40 mins I'm guessing it doesn't work. Unless I'm missing a trick, which is highly likely.

Tried using AbcImport, getting lock up. Have tested houdini engine and loading points direct from a houdini HDA, it makes a nucleus node filled with particles, works great.

Is there a way to make maya do the same direct from an abc file? Any other ideas?

Can maya even store unconnected points? The only way I can think of is to connect the dots with an add sop, then export an alembic as a curve. Maya will import that as a degree 1 nurbs curve. Each CV will be the original points.

tried it on a smaller export of 1000 points, to my surprise it does the right thing and creates a particle node, which is good, but it has no particles in it, which is bad.

SIIIGHHHHHH

I just imported a 1,000,000 point curve alembic in a second or two. If youre've after particles, you could emit from those CVs for 1 frame, perhaps

Works! Ugly as hell, but works. Thanks Mike!
