Emit nParticles from texture and goal them?

I have a project coming up where I may want to emit nParticles from a texture and goal them to the same point they are emitted from (in order to use their meshing capabilities to create, well, a model of a mesh!).

Can anyone point me in the right direction to achieve something like this? I don't think the emission part will be a problem, but I'm not sure how to get them to "stick" to the emitting surface in the same spot so that I can deform the emission geometry and have them move with it, which is what I'm going to want to do.

and maybe the cocoon node (page down a little):   http://www.soup-dev.com/examples2_9.htm

You can use parentU And parentV as an particle expression to goal your particles back to their emission position.

Create attribute parentU and parentV And goalU and goalV.

Creation expression:

GoalU = parentU
GoalV = parentV

Make sure to turn use UV on in the basic emitter tab.

Hope this helps

Ah yes parent and goal UV attributes! It's been a while, I'd forgotten that's actually pretty simple (even for a non particle person like me).

Is SoUP still a going concern? I remember a couple of years ago Peter Shipkov was working on a node-based editor for it to avoid having to get under the hood in Maya and make lots of difficult connections by hand. But it either never got finished, or never took off...?

Soup is still bring actively developed afaik, the node editor UI may not be, but the core of it is still getting updates.

Think of it as a gateway drug to Houdini. :)

Yeah, I think there were maybe 6 updates in the last year, both bug fixes and new features, so SOuP is still on the menu.

Maya's new(ish) node editor probably made the continued development of a soup alternative a bit redundant though.

god, the houdini guys must be kicking themselves over the lost pun-tential of the 'u' in 'SOuP'. it'd be hard to swallow. *boom tish*

I had a jacket potato with cheese and beans flavoured soup the other day.  Horrible.  And pointless.  Hungry now.

SOuP is going really strong and the last few updates have been fabulous. pointCloudToMesh, transformsToArray, cocoon nodes are some of the major highlights from the recent releases.
