Can anyone give me some pointers on which mode I should use to bake out Vray irradiance maps for an animation?

It seemed intuitive enough at first, but I'm finding I'm not getting expected results. On one machine I used the "Animation (Prepass)" mode to output a sequence of maps, but when I reload these maps and change the mode to "Animation (Rendering)" and render, I do not get the same result.

I also tried outputting a sequence of maps while also rendering, using the "Single Frame" mode, but this appears to overwrite the same file over. Which mode will both render a frame sequence and write out reuseable irradiance maps?

This is all further confused by the fact that reloaded maps cannot be opened in the irradiance map viewer (I get a wrong file type or wrong filename message, even though there is only file format that this feature appears to offer, i.e. vrmap), and it's not clear what the naming convention should be when entering the map name when you are saving out a sequence. Map sequences seem to load without a frame extension, or at least that's how it appears inside Vray's render settings.

I've mostly found Vray to be incredibly intuitive, unfortunately this is the first time I've come across an area in it that is mental ray-esque in its lack of clear docs or workflow.

There should be a frame extension on your vrmap. I think that's your problem.

I had frame extensions on the sequence that I output using the animation prepass mode, however when I brought this sequence back in and set the mode to animation rendering, it appeared that the GI was not being calculated. It was also unclear whether the frame sequence was being read, since no frame extension appears in the render settings (only "filename..vrmap".) I was further confused by the vrmap viewer telling me that "no valid file format specified" if I tried to open the map, even though it was the file that Vray had output! So it was impossible to figure out what was going on. Had to brute force it in the end, no harm done, but I would like to know why this didn't work and/or how to do it correctly for future reference. I think some clearer pop-up help or docs would be in order for this part of Vray. It's all in the details, as usual!

Rendering an animation using indirect illumination (GI) methods that rely on caching samples are known for producing frames that flicker. This is because the samples ...
