Hi Group,

We are currently trying to get a nice mash animation out of 2016 and rendering it in 2015 as an alembic.  (I can't render 2016 on our farm annoyingly).  We are having problems with getting good motion vectors and I was wondering if anyone had any insights.  A bit of a weird workflow I realise but it is how it needs to be where I am at the moment.  Everything else is fine, it is just the vectors that are being awkward.

Any ideas?

thanks

Hey Rebekah :)

Is the topology changing or is it consistent?
We only got motion blur working with changing topology as of 2017.

If the topology is static then I’m not sure what could be wrong off the top of my head - you could switch the network over to an Instancer and then bake that out into real objects which you could then alembic. Both those utilities are in the Create > MASH > Utilities menu in 2016.5 (Switch Geometry Type and Bake Instancer to Objects).

Best,
Ian

Thanks Ian,

We'll give it a go today.  The topology isn't changing and we can get regular motion blur working so we are close.  It's just the vectors that are being over emotional.  We can always go down the real motion blur route but the caches are already huge.  My engineers will hate me.
Thanks for your help as ever Ian.  You are a star..

I hope that pun was intentional.

It may be off topic here, but that changing topology motion blur you say it works on 2017..., also works with MASH networks using LODs (Level Of Detail)?. I needed that time ago and never got Motion Blur to work either in 3D or motion vectors because of that issue.

Sorry my bad, I didn’t write the motion blur code for Repro but I’ve just checked and it has two modes:

Motion Blur OR Changing Topology

Sorry for the false alarm. I assume the limitation is something to do with vertex orders but I can’t remember off the top of my head.
Best,
Ian
