I've got a weird thing going on with follicles

I have a surface, and thru breaking out a lot of the issues, is now just a nurbs plane,
parented under a group(shoulder),  that group is got a -180 in its rx, ( think of a rt side shoulder, flipped to mirror the left side)

on that surface i have follicles.

as i rotate the shoulder up, the follicles all flip on the surface.

I've put textures and shown origins on the surface and it doesn't change at all during this transition.
as well as tried different methods of creating the follicles,

 and yet, it still flips

something is up with this surface, but I can't figure out why its making the follicles flip,

anyone got any ideas?

 thanks

If you select that nurbs plane and do create hair system, do the resulting hairs flip during the animation?

Double check that the follicles input surface connection is from the nurbs plane and not some other construction history element. Perhaps there is some history downstream of the plane between the nurbs and the follicles?

With older cuts of Maya there were some flipping issues due to some degenerate problems along some axis, however I think these were all fixed by Maya2011. These problems would typically be that for a specific 90 deg axis aligned orientation the follicles would flip when exactly at that rotation..just making the rotation slightly non-axis aligned would remove the problem.

in this case I'm not using the follicles with hair, I'm using them to parent joints under.

but You may be right, about the resulting hairs, I think they dynamics kept them the right direction even though the follicles flipped.

I deleted out ALL history and shape unused shape nodes, and it was still flipping.

if I parented under a zero-ed out shoulder, it didn't flip...

I could probably remake the file, as right after i wrote the previous email, i deleted everything, and started over....

If the hair follicles flipped the hair would also flip. If the hair appears to work I would examine the difference of the create hair follicle connections with yours. Ignore the connections between the follicles and the hairsystem, however the connections to the nurbs and the follicle transform’s translate/rotate are important. Also do not parent the follicles to anything(although you can and should parent objects to the follicles).
