So, I've gotten this error a lot over the past year or so both on Maya 2013 and Maya 2015.  Occasionally, it will just shoot out an error like this:

"// Warning: Failed to open texture file d:/_projects/3d/07_3d/02_workingassets/06_textures/01_characters/bodysubsurfacecol.1001.exr".

The problem is that the entire file path printed out in the error is in lowercase.  The actual file paths are not in lower case, but for some reason Maya is looking for a lower case version of the path.

Once I get this error, I have to delete my userPrefs and rebuild them (I really should just save a copy of the userPrefs file for backup when they're set the way I like it, but whatever).  Once I do that, Maya reads the file paths properly with upper case where its supposed to be.

Has anyone ever encountered this, and do you have a fix that doesn't involve nuking my userPrefs?

What renderer, Vray? Is renderer using your maps, or maps actually fail to load? Do they show up in render?

Vray.

The maps fail to load in the hypershade.

Fun fact: I just found out that if I move my userPref.mel file out of the Maya pref's folder, let Maya rebuild its default settings, shut Maya down, then copy the original userPref file back to the pref's folder, everything works and my old settings are retained.

The error is gone for now, so I can't tell if the textures actually render.  I'm sure the error will pop back up.

Test your map with a constant shader (surface shader).. connect map to a constant shader and select objects from the original shader, attach constant shader to object/s and render. when finished tweaking attach back the original shader. Or if you have it as a pass in Vray frame buffer. You usually want to check textures separately (for gamma/color errors - you know, correct color pipeline workflow).
