Hey everyone,
Now that QuickTime player is considered a security risk, I'm looking for a new media player  and I was wondering what media player you guys are using?

We found 'djv_view' which is really really great and open source  but doesn't play audio with the clips :(

If anyone knows of a good (preferably free) media player that can:
- play frame by frame
- supports audio
- can play mov formats

would also love to hear what others are using even if it doesn't match exactly.

Thanks :)

hi,

It does frame by frame with audio and quicktime .mov support.

QT is considered a security risk? Can you elaborate?

I use VLC player quite a bit, though not sure about its frame by frame capabilities. it will play almost anything though.

I used to play my files with Media Player Classic (I think it is discontinued), also the Media Player Classic Home Cinema and lately I've been trying PotPlayer which is quite good too. Light Alloy is another one. All these support frame by frame. Cheers

Thank you Dave mrViewer is perfect!

and Steve  the US Homeland Security announced that QT on windows  has 2 vulnerabilities which aren't going to be fixed by Apple since they officially stopped supporting QT on windows, so they highly recommend uninstalling QT.

or just google 'quick time security'

we wanted to be on the safe side so we're replacing it.

and thanks to Dave we have a great replacement, so Thanks again :)

Adobe says it's products will break without QuickTime, just FYI. I think we are stuck for a while.

I haven't tried this myself as I'm currently on an OSX system, but Teddy Gage on the After Effects list recommended the following steps a few days ago to still be able to use Quicktime codecs but not have to worry about the security holes in QT Player:

Pretty important that you do this, as down the road there could be serious security implications. They have already identified two zero-day holes in Quicktime Player that will not be patched. This means a hacker could gain complete control over affected systems. They would still need the user to click on malware-affected websites or files via typical phishing or spam email. Note this is NOT the same as the Quicktime codecs and also this ONLY affects PC users, not OSX. So, all is not lost, here are the simple steps you need to follow to resolve the problem:

1. In your add / remove programs, uninstall QT player completely.

2. Go to the apple QT installer download page and grab the latest package for Windows

3. During install, make sure that everything except the "critical components" is NOT installed. (Xed out). Leave the top option for install only (something like "media for third party apps" - this is the codecs only)

4. Install as normal

Now you're good to go, AE and PPRO work fine, and QT player for Windows is no longer an issue

I haven't researched this myself so count personally vouch for it, but it's probably worth a try,

I can vouch for this, those steps indeed only leave the codec installed but NOT the QT player or web player, which I hope is secure enough.
Those steps along with Dave 'mrViewer' is a perfect solution

Mrplayer is pretty good. The audio seems to be mono for some reason. Is there a setting for that or dies it just not work?
