...anyone written any code to reach in and grab this data from Maya? Any experiences shared would be appreciated.

I don't know much about the fur API (if there is any) but I wrote a hair
mental ray exporter using MFnPfxGeometry,
and its quite simple and straightforward. Do you have any specific
questions?

Hi,

Yes. What type of information about the hair can you grab out of there? Is it the follicle data or guide hairs? Also is any of the instancing information available from there as well? The API i'm trying to compare it against is Shave and a Haircut where you seem to be able to grab most of the information about the guide hairs from it.

Than you're out of luck. The only information you can query directly is
the pfx data that knows nothing about which follicle produced which hair.
You can also get some follicle and output curve data using MHairSystem
but you can't get the pfxCurves using it.
