Hi,
Is it legal to use MaxScale in commercial applications without modifying its source code?

I have read licensing-faq and comments and I’m still clueless if commercial applications are allowed to use MariaDB Server and MaxScale without paying for a license.

Regards.

Hi,

Depends on which MaxScale version you are referring to.

MaxScale 1.4 is GPL and can be used anywhere and by anybody, but MaxScale 2.X requires a license if you have more than two servers behind MaxScale.

The MariaDB server is GPL and can be used without any restrictions whatsoever.

Hi Johan,

In the continuation to the below i would like to know about the below License agreement.
I have come across this license @ https://github.com/mariadb-corporation/MaxScale/blob/2.1/LICENSE.TXT... which says the below

"The Business Source License (this document, or the “License”) is not an Open Source license. However, the Licensed Work will eventually be made available under an Open Source License, as stated in this License."
Could you let us know when soon are you planning bring this under Open source?

Regards

Hi,

The change dates for 2.1 are in the same document:

Change Date:          2019-07-01

Change License:       Version 2 or later of the GNU General Public License as
published by the Free Software Foundation.

This means that the license will be converted to GPLv2 on 2019-07-1.

Hi,

And as a small clarification, on that date MaxScale 2.1 becomes GPL without any further action needed by anyone.

So, from 2019-07-01 onwards MaxScale 2.1.X can be used in any context - commercial or not - without paying anything to anybody.

The change date for the soon to be released MaxScale 2.2 is 2020-01-01.

I found this old thread about licensing and had a question. Let's say I have two completely independent pairs of master-slave servers. If I were to use two separate listener ports, separate monitoring and routing for them in one MaxScale 2.3 instance, would that violate Maxscale's free license? Or should I deploy two separate MaxScale installations for each pair of MariaDB servers?

Hi,

I'm no lawyer but two pairs of servers sounds like four servers in total. I'd recommend reaching out via the contact form on mariadb.com and asking the question there.

Hi,
What exact version of 2.3 are you using? Namely, the Change Date, that is, the day when the license changes from BSL to GPL and all limitations are removed, of 2.3.12 is 2022-01-1 and you are free to use it in any way you like. The Change Date of 2.3.13 is 2023-10-29 and after 2.3.13 the Change Date changes with each maintenance release.

Br,
  Johan
