Hello,

I am a student working with maxent and was wondering where the best place to find free elevation data that is USEABLE in maxent would be. The reason I say useable, is because I have found numerous different data sources for global elevation/terrain data, all of which were in foreign filetypes that MaxEnt does not recognize (.kml, .shp, etc.).

How do i find .asc elevation data?

Hi Charlotte,
You can download the elevation data from google earth. However the best elevation data you can find From USGS DIGITAL ELEVATION MODEL. You have to register and log in to download the DEM File. After that you need to convert it Raster to. asc  file in arc gis then you can run into maxent for model building

Best wishes

HI Surajit,

I've gone to the USGS digital elevation model (2010). I also registered and logged in, but cannot find where to download the DEM file. Also, i have qgis, but not arcgis. Is it still possible to convert the raster to .asc file?

Thanks so much for your help,

~Charlotte

I wanted to add that I was able to download the 7.5 arc second zip file from USGS, but all of the files I downloaded are .adf, and when I try to open them my ocmputer doesn't even recognize the file type (i am working off of a mac)

Hi Charlotte,
Yes it is possible to convert raster file to .asc file in QGIS. You have to do the following steps to convert raster to .asc : Go to Raster-> conversion-> Translate(Convert Format) ->Input layer and output layer(select Arc/Info ASCII Grid ).

To download the DEM file you have to do the following steps : Login USGS Earth explorar --> Select Area you want to download DEM--> click DATA SET---> Select SRTM 1 ARC sec-----> Click Results ------> click Download option -----> popup window opened click download geotiff.

I am also attached the jpeg file to complete the  following two procedure. Hope it is helpful for you.......

Hi Surajit,

Thank you so much! That was extremely helpful. I was able to follow all fo the steps, however I am wondering, if I am working with a global map (i.e, i am using the entire map, not just a select polygon), is there any way to download the results for the entire thing instead of downloading it grid by grid (that way I can input it into maxent)?

Thank you so so much for all of your help,

~Charlotte

Hey Surajit,

Sorry for my constant emails, and thanks again for being super helpful. I was able to convert a tif of spatial elevation data into the .asc format using qgis, but now i have another problem. The bioclim data i am using is a different size than the elevation file. How do i make all of the files the same size? Not sure if this is helpful, but here's a screenshot of all of the files, with the elevation at the very bottom (that's the one file that is a different size from the rest).

Thank you so much for your help again,

Hey Charlotte,
It's ok never mind. Actually I am not working on global scale , I have a small sample area that's why I am not facing such problem like you however I really don't know how to resize of all the bioclm and dem file. But one thing I noticed in your screen shot that your dem file is too low resolution  and your bioclm file too high resolution (30s). If it is yes  then you need to download the low resolution bioclm file (10m). I am attached a screen shot of low resolution 10 minutes bioclm file. its size just 10 to 11 mb.
Hope it is help full for you

Best Wishes

Hey Charlotte,

One thing I forgot to told you that above screen shot all are in global scale at a 10 minutes spatial resolution.

Best wishes
