Hi,

I'm new to the group and so may have missed this previously. I am
about to buy a new computer and want to get a 64-bit machine, is
maxent compatible? does anyone have experience with htis issue?

Thanks,

Sam

Dear Sam,
Maxent is a java application, so you just download jre for 64-bits machines
and that's all. Using 64-bit java you can increase the RAM used by maxent,
which speeds the process quite a lot ("-mx7000m" in my computer, which means
that it is taking 7 GB of RAM; impossible with 32-bit machines)

However, depending on the navigator you have installed, most likely you will
have installed 32-bit java (Firefox 64-bits is unstable). So you must
meander quite a bit inside the sun microsystems download site to get the
64-bit java installer (jre-6u20-windows-x64.exe). I need, in my 64-bit
system, both java installations, otherwise Firefox (32-bit) is unhappy with
the 64-bit java and some sites --downloading literature through SCOPUS, for
example-- don't work.

Once 64-bit java is installed, I think Maxent will be smart enough to find
the 64-bit installation, otherwise you must add a JAVA_HOME environment
variable (in my computer: "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\") and add
"C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\" to the PATH environment variable
(separated with ";" from the previous key).

Perhaps all this rambling is not needed in your case, but I use ArcInfo
Workstation to run complicated batches, and when ArcInfo calls Maxent, the
moronic looks for the 32-bit installation (don't ask me why).

Hope this helps,
Jesús

Hi Jesús,
Thanks for sharing these tips for using Maxent on a 64-bit machine. I recently ordered a 64-bit computer and was curious about how Maxent will run on the new computer.

Best wishes,
Sunil
