Hello dear Maxent users!

I need to run Maxent in R and I saw there are two different packages - "maxent" and "maxnet". Could somebody please tell me what the difference is?
Also there are packages like "dismo" but I guess this is just a collection of different methods.

I am grateful for any advice on how to proceed building my very first model.

Thank you,
Heiko

Hi
As far as I know maxent is not for species distribution modeling.
use maxnet

This paper should elucidate:

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com.ezproxy.gc.cuny.edu/doi/10.1111/ecog.03049/full

Assuming you want to run the software maxent.jar for modeling species niches and distributions, it can be run from the package "dismo" (it calls the Java program). The package "maxnet" is an R-based Maxent implementation that uses glmnet with regularization to approximate the fit of maxent.jar (Google Scholar "Maxent" and "PPPM" to follow the academic discussion linking Maxent to GLMs under certain conditions). Package "maxnet" is written by Stephen Phillips, who wrote maxent.jar.

I see. So the "maxent" R package is just a connection to the actual java application and the "maxnet" is an actual R code independent of this java app.
I will try to bild my models with both and see if the results are similiar (I hope they will be :-))

Heiko, do not confuse the R package "maxent" (which does multinomial logistic regression and it is NOT for species distribution modelling) with the maxent.jar Java application.  To do species distribution modelling in R you have two options, as far as I know:

a) Use the function "maxent" in the package "dismo", which calls the maxent.jar application.
b) Use the package "maxnet" which is a new implementation that runs in R and uses 'glmnet' for model fitting.

All the best,

Julian
