Dear Group,

I want to use the Maxent tutorial to teach an undergrad class. Anyone
here knows were I can find detailed descriptions of the environmental
variables available in the tutorial?
Thanks,
Gabriel

Hi Gabriel,

You might find further information about the variables at http://worldclim.org/
There is also a paper, from where the variables were chosen:

Nix, 1986. A biogeographic analysis of Australian elapid snakes.
In: R. Longmore (ed.).
Atlas of elapid snakes of Australia. Australian Flora and Fauna
Series 7.
Australian Government Publishing Service, Canberra.

However, I couldn't have access to it yet.

Best wishes,

Gabriel: A further reference on Worldclim:

Thanks for all the replies,
It doesn't look like in the tutorial they used the Worldclim variables.
In the document they say 'The environmental data we will use consist of
climatic and elevational data for South America, together with a
potential vegetation layer'. And the name of the variables are:
pre6190_l10, pre6190_l7, tmn6190_ann, h_dem, tmx6190_ann, vap6190_ann,
dtr6190_ann, pre6190_l4 frs6190_ann, ecoreg, pre6190_l1, tmp6190_ann,
pre6190_ann, cld6190_ann
Anyone know what these codes mean?
Gabriel

Hi Gabriel,

Among the environmental data available for download at the Maxent, the climatic variables derive from data provided by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and were produced using

thin-plate spline interpolation based on readings taken at weather stations around the world from 1961 to 1990.

cld6190_ann : cloud cover, annual

dtr6190_ann : diurnal temperature range, annual

frs6190_ann : frost frequency, annual

pre6190_ann : precipitation, annual

pre6190_I1 : precipitation, January

pre6190_I4 : precipitation, April

pre6190_I7 : precipitation, July

pre6190_I10 : precipitation, October

tmn6190_ann : mean temperature, annual

tmp6190_ann : minimum temperature, annual

tmx6190_ann : maximum temperature, annual

vap6190_ann : vapour pressure, annual

According Phillips et al. (2006)

I hope that this help.
