We've played with the Quickcam Orbitz AF before and I think the trick is that the pan/tilt controls are not absolute. Each write to those attributes will move +/- some number of increments. To get absolute positioning you need to do a trick like Logitech's software does to first move it to one extreme of both the pan/tilt controls and then move it by various increments keeping track of your current position.

The Logitech 9000 series seems to work a bit nicer in this regard because it just uses a large sensor and does the pan/tilt by shifting around a smaller AOI around the sensor. In that camera the pan/tilt are absolute controls.

The Quickcam driver exposes Pan/Tilt controls via DirectShow to IMAQdx. They show up as attributes (similar to exposure time and gain controls) that can be controlled in MAX or in LabVIEW programatically using property nodes. You can get more details of this in the IMAQdx help or some of the many guides available online (such as -9038 )

The original poster solved his problem by downgrading the version of the driver used. Presumably Logitech had some bug in their DirectShow interface that was preventing it from working correctly (I'm not sure, as I have not had issues with these cameras in the past).

thank you ! i have already been able to control the pan and tilt. But the new problem is i can just control one of them in a time which means if i change pan and tilt at the same time there will be an error! If you reset the pan and tilt from the logitech driver you would notice that the driver change the pan and tilt at the same time! can any of you do this as well?

Hi, so I am a real newbie on this but I also got the camera with the vision part working but I have no idea how to even make a vi or an interface to control pan, tilt with the AF Orbit logitech cam
Any ideas or links I would highly appreciate them!

This site hosts the Linux driver for the QuickCam Express and otherQuickCam-related and QuickCam-compatible USB web cameras. The originalwork was done by Georg Acher and was known as qce-ga;Jean-Frederic Clere took that driver and created the first Video4Linux (V4L)driver, enabling popular V4L applications such as Xawtv to display picturesfrom the webcam. Since then, a group of developers around the worldhave evolved the driver into its current state, adding support for newcameras and chipsets as they have become available. In the process, the driver became known as qc-usb to reflect the fact that itsupports a wide variety of USB-attached QuickCam cameras, not just theQuickCam Express.

The QuickCam driver is currently available in two forms.

  1. The qc-usb driver was originally focused on the QuickCam Web, but should now work with all cameras that work also with qce-ga. It contains a superset qce-ga's features and is the preferred driver. Almost everyone will use this driver. Download it from our Sourceforge release page.
  2. The CVS versions available by following the Sourceforge CVS usage instructions. The module names are quickcam and qc-usb.
InstallationThis section explains how to compile and install the qc-usb driverfor the Linux kernel. For the most current instructions, please read the README that comes with the driver. These instructions explain how to compile the driver as a standalone module, which is the only optionat this time because the driver has not (yet) been integrated into the mainline kernel.

Certain new Logitech QuickCam Express and Labtec cameras are reported not to work. These cameras have product IDs of 0x920 and 0x921. For these cameras, you might be able to use the SPCA5xxdriver, which incorporates and, evidently, obsoletes this experimental driver.

The best (read, "most efficient") way to contact the developers is to email the qce-ga-discussionmailing list list with details of the problem you areexperiencing. To subscribe or unsubscribe from the list, visit the mailinglists page. You can also track the mailing list via the Usenetreflector at gmane.linux.drivers.quickcam.general

The development list is only used for patches and development-relatedissues. Please do not send general usage questions or problems to thedevelopers' list. The developers' list, like the users' list, isreflected to Usenet at gmane.linux.drivers.quickcam.devel.

I've significantly upgraded things in terms of processing power, RAM, hard drive etc which I wanted for reasons that are not relevant (at least I don't think they are) to this post. The SB3 is running Windows 10 Home whereas the SB2 was on Windows 10 Pro.

Because I sit in front of three screens with the SB plugged into a dock, I don't use the built in camera and have the lid of the SB closed. This has meant that I need to use a webcam for client meetings over Zoom and MS Teams. Last week I found an Logitech webcam that I had had in the cupboard for a number of years and plugged it in to the SB2 (this is before the picked up the SB3). It's a C525 and it plugged in to the dock and worked perfectly with the SB2.

Today I've largely finished installing all the software I want on the SB3 so I can use that and put away the SB2. One issue has cropped up though. The SB3 is telling me there is a Driver Error for the Logitech C525. I've told Windows to update the Driver but it tells me the right driver is installed and no matter what I do, it won't seem to work. I plugged the SB2 back into the dock and the camera again worked fine on it so it's not the camera itself.

I've been on the logitech website and found the setup software and installed it but it keeps telling me I need to plug in a camera for it to work ... even though the camera is plugged in. I've tried different USB ports on the dock and on the SB3 itself. One time it fired up for a bit and told me to restart to finish installing which I did. But when it rebooted, the same errors occurred.

Launch device manager, Right click the Webcam and select "Uninstall Device" then make sure you click "Delete the driver software for this device".
Unplug and plug it back in and it should re-download the latest driver from Windows Update. You shouldn't need anything special for a logitech camera.

Freitasm: SB3 is on version 1909 and the SB2 is on version 1903. I've not idea what inf files are or what you mean by that (IT isn't my background. I can correct a lot of things myself but the really technical stuff is a foreign languare)

michaelmurfy: Where do I find the right driver? I downloaded something from Logitech website called Logitech Camera Settings. Is the driver embedded in there somewhere? How do I get it and tell the SB to use that? Every time I click on Logitech Camera Settings itself it is telling me that no camera is installed.

@RNZALR if you can download the drivers and unpack (if it's a zip file) into a temporary folder you can right-click the device in Device Manager, Update Driver, select "Browse my Computer for Drivers" and select "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer".

I'm fast coming to the conclusion that I'm going to need to invest in a new webcam. The thing is I'm now nervous that the next one will do it too! Should I steer clear of Logitech or am I being a little too paranoid? Any recommendations on a good webcam with high resolution images etc but not at a ridiculous price as it's just used for zoom meetings as and when they occur would be greatly received.

I went through everything in Device Manager and noticed it was appearing under sound and video game controllers and human imaging devices but not cameras. I deleted the driver software from everywhere then plugged it all back in and it seemed to be OK. It asked me to restart to finish setting up and I did ... then it crashed again! So I repeated the process but didn't do a restart and the camera is working fine. I've since done a restart and things have continued to work. Not sure what has happened and certainly nervous that it'll crash again. But for the time being, it's working and holding so I'm happy.
