Version vs forks for SDK 1.66?

I've been out of the loop with Maven Gae Plugin. I noticed some people have created branches to implement recent updates to the GAE SDK (1.66?). Is it better to work with branches or is Rodolfo's original git repository incorporating those changes? How up-to-date is the original repository at this point?

I try to keep everything up to date, receive pull requests and publish at least sporadically..
