"You can have everything in life that you want if you will just help enough other people to get what they want."
- Zig Ziglar
Dear Family and Friends,
As most of you know, I'm involved with Muslims Without Borders, which is the first and only student-based relief agency in the US. Alhamduillah around this time last year, a group of friends and myself got together and founded this, and now a year later Allah has blessed us with the opportunity of gaining so much reward by being all over the world when difficult times strike. In recognition of our one year anniversary MWB launched a video with a new project that we hope will capture the hearts of many more students that are filled with energy and willing to be dedicated to alleviating the suffering that happens each and everyday, sometimes so close that our own families and friends are affected. As you watch this video, I ask you to take a good look at the faces of these young inspirational men and women and be ready to be amazed by what change they will cause today, tomorrow, and forever!
In just 1 week, another Ramadan will knock on our doors and we must ask ourselves if we are ready this time as this Ramadan may very well be our last. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would be the most active during this month than at any other time and always advocated to give charity and help others. I'm honored and blessed that while I'm in this world, filled with energy, I can do a project that I hope will be able to change the life of a few children forever. This Ramadan, I've launched a project called "Ramadan Smile." As Muslims, we are taught that to smile in the face of one’s brother is considered charity. We revel in the fact that the smallest of actions—one that takes us so little effort—is something that we actually get rewarded for. However, this blessing—the ability to give others the gift of a smile—is one that we often take for granted.
Can you imagine struggling to speak, eat, and even breathe? Can you imagine being abused, ridiculed, and forbidden to go to school or to play with kids, all because of a minor facial defect? Every year more than 170,000 children are born with clefts, most of whom can’t afford surgery, and who struggle on a daily basis throughout their lives. Clefts are openings or gaps that occur before birth and can affect the lips, eyes, ears, nose, cheeks, and/or forehead. They are a major problem in developing countries where there are millions of children suffering from unrepaired clefts. Most cannot eat or speak properly. They aren't allowed to attend schools or hold a job, and they face very difficult lives filled with shame, isolation, pain and heartache. Their clefts usually go untreated simply because they are poor—too poor to pay for a minor surgery that has been around for decades and that can change their lives forever...
So this Ramadan, we are turning to you for help, give a child with a cleft a second chance at life—give them the gift of a smile. One donation is all it takes to give the gift that keeps on giving.
