************************> CUT HERE FOR FORWARDED MESSAGE! <*********************
Since nobody else seems to have posted, I was at the Nebulas last
night, held at the Queen Mary Hotel, Long Beach, CA and here are the
results:
Novel: The Terminal Experiment (serialized as "Hobson's Choice")
by Robert J. Sawyer
Novella: "Last Summer at Mars Hill" by Elizabeth Hand
(accepted by Kris Rusch)
Novelette: "Solitude" by Ursula K. Le Guin
Short Story: "Death and the Librarian" by Esther M. Friesner
Grand Master: A. E. Van Vogt
Special "service to SFWA" award to Chuq Von Rospach, accepted by Mike Resnick.
Special "Author Emeritus" designation to Wilson "Bob" Tucker.
Notes:
No person who grew up in Canada has ever won a Hugo or Nebula.
(Adult Immigrants William Gibson and Spider & Jeanne Robinson
have won, as has child emigrant Gordon R. Dickson)
This year, two Canadians (Sawyer and Van Vogt) were awarded
Nebulae.
For some reason, the highlight was bungee jumping by several
authors, including 1994 winner Martha Soukup and 1995 nominee
Geoff Landis. We now believe no author to bungee jump on
the day of the awards has won an award.
Rob Sawyer sold a book 2 days ago, clearly frustrated and not
waiting long enough to get this boost.
Toastmaster George Effinger pretended that with so many editors
in the audience perhaps he would pitch his latest book.
A motion to eliminate the Grand Master nebula award after a
final melee round to appoint those remaining was defeated fairly
solidly.
A. E. Van Vogt's appearance was well received. Sadly, he is
in the twilight of his life and his faculties are seriously
diminished but he got a standing ovation for his contribution
to the field.
