Hello all,

We are beginning to research an upgrade to our web server hardware, mainly for an adhoc query building product we purchased.

My question is given the other 2 main components (ColdFusion 8 and IIS) what are your thoughts on server hardware?

1) Does multi CPUs help and when does that help level off ( 2, 4, 8 CPUs)?

2) What about memory, how much is helpful and when do we stop getting a bang for our buck?

Right now our server is Intel based running Windows 2003 Server OS.

Thanks for the help.

Brook,

I can't really comment on the effectiveness of the >2 CPUs, but I am fairly certain that the maximum memory cutoff is 4GB on standard 32bit hardware / software combination. If you plan on going to a 64bit OS/hardware then the memory "bang for the buck" is based on CF's ability to utilize that much (which I have not had the opportunity of finding out myself) and not the hardware.

You can read about the memory limit here: http://www.dansdata.com/askdan00015.htm.

I'll be very interested to hear what you find out in your research on the ideal server configuration.

Brian
