I too am having withdrawals...when you come to know and love something and then "poof" it's gone, it's a hard thing to come to grips with. So much change in the world, it was nice knowing Webshots was always there for us. So, upwards and onwards we go...at least we're doing it together. Thanks Stewart for putting this group together.

I uninstalled Smile, and re-installed webshots and I have my calendar back now. Probably only until Dec. 1, I know they will do something diabolical like send out a net-wide "kill" order for webshots installed on our computers, like their "smile" program did when it automatically destroyed my webshots and installed itself without any how-do-you-do! Very intrusive and not well-thought out method of changing us all over.

So, my lovely little calendar is back, and I can use the program temporarily to cycle my personal photos through...Smile deleted all of my Pro shots albums when it did it's little wham-bam to my computer, (I feel like my privacy was invaded) so those are gone now. Too bad, I spent years collecting my favorites, and I nurtured them through 5 computer changes.

Oh well, like I said...onwards and upwards...hmmm, a little thought just popped into my head. Don't we have some coders in our little community? Can't we come up with some kind of little program like Webshots, with the calendar and wallpaper, and have some kind of photo sharing? Sure would be nice, and you know I'd pay a monthly fee to be a part of it, just like we did on Webshots. just an idea, people...wish I knew how to do it, I would already be working on it.

Didn't someone give instructions on how to find one's "stolen pix" from the Webshots desktop manager on your computer? Instructions are either on the Webshots Blog or in one of these discussion threads.

I'd say a System Restore would be a good first step. (You'll get back old data without losing any new emails, docs, etc.).

When the Webshots desktop program is taken away, do they really take away all the photo files that were inside the Webshots Data folder (which is inside My Documents). Or do they just zap the program files? If the data is still there, surely you could get the photos back into the desktop manager, once you've resurrected that.

Also, after I installed, then uninstalled, the Smile program -- I noticed a folder remained in My Documents called "Smile" -- with some trepidation, fearing it would stimulate an aggressive takeover of my computer, I looked inside -- and there were copies of all the photos I'd had in my Webshots desktop program. The only bummer is that they all had that Webshots copyright watermark on them. But hey, better than nothing.

Is there any way to expand the photos I have saved over the years from the proprietary webshots format to JPG? I have over 7 gigs of backgrounds I have saved (as a premium user) since 1999 and I guess they will all go out the window if I can't convert them.

First, the Smile folder question. On my computer -- Windows XP with older version of Webshots desktop -- it showed up in My Documents.

Secondly, I found the advice I remembered -- it was from Granny Cool in this Flickr discussion -- www.flickr.com/groups/wscommunity/discuss/72157631702389831/ "Here's what I learned (the hard way) I was switched to Smile aka slime, without being warned or asked. I had time to backup my online photos, but I had all of them on my harddrive or cds anyway. What I learned that I think is valuable is that if you switch - voluntarily or not - slime installs itself on your computer. If you look for that folder on your computer under the programs, you will find 3 or 4 sub-folders with seemingly random names. Open them one by one, because one of them has all the photos you had saved to your WebShots desktop but NOT online ! I was THRILLED when I found it ! I then re-named it 'stolen pix' and put it in my pictures folder and then uninstalled slime. If you want to do this WITHOUT slime getting all of your photos (I had 15,000 online at WebShots) go to WebShots & delete all your albums there after you have backed them up. THEN install slime & find the folder I mentioned with all your desktop photos hiding in it & THEN uninstall slime. It is taking me 3 days to delete all the photos slime posted to their website without my permission ... "

Third, yes you can convert with Ultimate Webshots Converter -- have to do a google search for it. But the host of this Flickr group discourages that out of respect for intellectual property rights of the photographers. But I just wanted to convert for my own personal use -- to save my beloved wallpapers / screensavers which I had downloaded for 10 years -- and paid for by being a Premium member.

One warning for you -- when I tried to get UWC through Softpedia, I kept pressing download and got a bunch of downloading / internet search programs instead -- which hijacked my search engines with something called Conduit. Spent hours working to undo that. And have only liberated Chrome. Still need to liberate IE8 and Firefox. So I'd suggest getting UWC from some other source. Or maybe you're smarter than I am and can get the .exe file without accidentally downloading all that other stuff. I'm not putting any more information here out of respect for wishes of the wscommunity group host.

I don't know if this will help, but I did a system restore to a point prior to Smile being downloaded. then I uninstalled the WS daily download app which is how Slime infested my computer. then I went into WS desktop and undid any option that allowed it to connect to the internet or WS. So far it is working fine and no sign of Slime. and of course, I have not gone back to the slime/WS site. Since I did the system restore and WS is no longer connected to the internet, I think it will work as a stand alone app. All my picures and albums are intact and the screensaver is working OK.

But you're right - what they did was incredibly intrusive and a violation of privacy. I am so glad I did not store my picture library on their site - I would be devastated at such a loss. My pictures are my life. How can they violate people in the ways I have been reading? It is so tragically, devastatingly, wrong.

Every time I reboot my computer that pesky Smile desktop application tries to install. My Windows 7 asks me for permission every time a program wants to install and I always say 'NO.' So far I still have my Webshots screensaver but I'm wondering if it will keep working after Webshots closes later this fall. I guess we will find out. DeAnn

RickSparky:

I think you just answered my new post about the webshots installer, which I didn't keep. I did NOT install Smile, but I will eventually change computers and would like to be able to reinstall the webshots program. Will check out cnet, unless someone has the installer and is willing to send it to me. Thanks

The CNET link for webshots is actually SMILE - bah humbug I didn't save the file the last time I downloaded Webshots so I would love to know if there's some other site out there where I can download it.

I'm still using Webshots, but for some reason my wallpaper now has side borders (from the basic desktop configuration). The pictures themselves are okay, it's just applied when they're shown as wallpaper. Anyone know how to fix that?

Once a web service, Webshots is now a fully-fledged desktop application with a knack on making things easier when it comes to wallpapers and screensavers. The application supports comfy drag-and-drop feature for users to upload their personal photographs and share them with their friends and family right from Windows.
