I would have thought that the installer would have downloaded everything to /tmp instead of /root/Downloads, but as long as you didn't select /root/Downloads as your installation directory for MATLAB and this is only the temporary download location you can certainly remove it after successfully installing MATLAB to a "typical" location such as /usr/local/MATLAB/R2016a.

The user will then be able to download the MATLAB installer on the computer where they plan to activate and the software. The computer will need to maintain a connection to the Internet during download, installation, and activation of the software.

In addition to the desktop version of the software, all Swarthmore employees and students have access to an online version of MATLAB at: matlab.mathworks.com. This can be used from any web browser. You need to set up a MathWorks account and associate it with Swarthmore's license before using (see instructions below).

Swarthmore community members can install MATLAB on any college or personally-owned computer by first creating a MathWorks account (see instructions above) and then downloading the appropriate MATLAB installer.

Go to mathworks.com/downloads. If needed, log in with your MathWorks account information. Select the version of MATLAB that you would like to use. ITS recommends using the latest version unless you have a reason to use an earlier release.

Students and faculty can visit the MATLAB portal through the button below. Upon accessing the portal, users can run the installer, view video tutorials and obtain software support. Users will first be prompted for their myBama username and password, then users will be directed to a MATLAB login page. Users with an existing MATLAB account can login, or users can create an account. After logging in with or establishing a MATLAB account, the download will be available.

Existing MATLAB users can also download the software through the MATLAB portal. Simply run the installer, and the UA System-wide license will be applied to your MATLAB software. With the UA System license, users will receive the latest version of MATLAB will all available toolboxes. This is the same procedure users follow to obtain new releases of the software.

MATLAB Package Manager (MPM) offers a streamlined method to install MATLAB and accompanying MathWorks products on Linux systems, directly from the command line. This utility facilitates programmatic installation without necessitating user sign-in, a File Installation Key, or a pre-acquired license file, deferring activation and licensing to post-installation. MPM permits specification of MATLAB release version, additional toolboxes, and installation directory. Additionally, it serves well for constructing MATLAB Docker containers. As of 2023, the MATLAB installer does not support Wayland, and this is an easy way to install MATLAB via command-line.

The matlabAUR package is designed to allow MATLAB to be integrated into and managed by Arch. Note however, that the package does not contain the installation files, and you are expected to place them in the cloned package folder yourself. It can be problematic to build the package using AUR helpers, so you are expected to do so manually. You can obtain the actual MATLAB software using the installer from the MathWorks website.

Matlab downloads all packages to /tmp/ directory which resides in RAM and is maximum size of half of available memory. In this case it is not enough for installation files and Matlab 2019a installer will warn you about this. If it did not, or if you ignored the warning, you will have got the above error.

This problem is critical during installation. After one clicks some elements in the installation window, he will not be able to type into any textbox anymore and switching between windows does not always work. To circumvent the issue, one shall only use key-press, instead of mouse click during installation. MATLAB installer has a poor support on Wayland, one may also consider using other WM instead during installation.

If you run the installer as root and the GUI does not appear (but does appear without launching as root), try temporarily allowing the root user to access the X Server by running the following commands in order (where ./install is the command to run the installer as root):

Once the files are downloaded, the second step is to run the installer. Once again, you must be a license administrator to complete this step. Only the license administrators can install MATLAB with a file installation key.
