Thanks to everyone who showed up and made our event yesterday the big success that it was! At least 100 people came by... and we didn't run out of food! People were relaxing on the front porch, exploring the grounds, checking out the upstairs rooms with their tiny-house-sized closets, and getting to know their neighbors or catching up with old friends. We got several new members and a few wonderful donations to the collection, we sold some books, etc. Even drank a little local Boldt whiskey infused with Honeydew Hindley wheat!
I really love events that get people together who might not usually mingle. We all live here, and part of the beauty of our remote rural location is that we rely on each other to be good neighbors, and might depend on them in the event of some emergency or hardship. So it's good to get to know each other.
We didn't have much up in the way of displays yet... but we did offer the main attraction of the Petrolia Quilt. We will try to have that exhibited also next Sunday, when we start a series of regular, probably Sunday afternoon, "Open Doors"-- a few of us will be there working and visiting, and the public will be welcome to stop by, though we would not call them "events" and won't have such an attractive buffet available as offered yesterday! We will keep you posted as to the open hours this coming Sunday (Memorial Day weekend) the 28th.
The slide show i narrated was well enjoyed, but a bit specialized on Roscoe and other Upper Mattole families' histories; I plan to put on a basic, introductory slide show on the highlights of Mattole Valley history sometime in June. We will probably hold that down at the Community Center in Petrolia, for the benefit of the many newer people there who aren't familiar with the Valley's past. Will keep you posted about that, too!
BUT back to this past Saturday's event... I am not even going to try to thank everyone who prepared the grounds, the house, the food, etc., because surely i would miss someone and NOBODY who did anything should feel underappreciated! But say i limit it to a handful of people i cannot not mention: The guys who got on the heavy equipment outside and cleared a great parking area (not to mention several other important jobs involving plumbing and safety-- Laurence Hindley, Larry (Delores's guy), Thomas D., Jeff R., Bob S., and others. Our energetic and inspirational co-directors, Lisa Hindley and Lori Cook, who made sure the food and drink and all the important functions like bathrooms were ready! The indefatigable Dyan Damron, supposedly our Treasurer but also an all-around get-the-business-done essential! Thomas Clark and Ari Lane for providing songs (Ari, really appreciated the last verses of that Boom and Bust song... phew!). Thomas Dunklin also for the handrail and carpets, the window, the looped slideshow, the tech support--and tick removal.
As i said, i didn't want to name more than a handful, but of course, everyone on our Board came to the preparatory work parties and they continue to bolster our enthusiasm for the Roscoe House at Granny Creek project... and the Board is: Lori and Lisa, co-directors; Thomas Dunklin, secretary; Dyan, treasurer; Bob Stansberry, Cindy Lyman, Tammy Robison, Sharon Zanone, Tody Cook, and Jamie Roscoe (who, along with his brother Rob and cousin BJ, unfortunately were unable to be there yesterday).
Will put up some photos later on.
Thanks again to all!
