ZMAIL, your dose of Vitamin Z
September 2013

Detroit Zoo's Newest Star

Zuhura - Swahili for "morning star" - is the stellar name given to a female chimpanzee born in the early morning hours of August 10 at the Detroit Zoo. Zuhura can be seen clinging to mom Chiana as she carries her around the Great Apes of Harambee. See them climbing trees outdoors on sunny days and hanging out in the habitat's spacious dayrooms during inclement weather.

Food for thought

Did you know it takes over 637,000 pounds of food each year to feed all the animals at the Detroit Zoo, big and small?!

As a non-profit responsible for the care and welfare of more than 3,300 animals, we rely on charitable gifts to support our mission of Celebrating and Saving Wildlife. Donations of any amount to the Detroit Zoo Fund help with this effort. After all, we have a lot of mouths to feed!
