Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, by Judi Barrett and Illustrated by Ron Barrett is a well known children's storybook. It has sold over three million copies since its publication in 1982. Children all over the world have become familiar with this book. It brings humor, fantasy, and imagination into classrooms throughout. Children have the chance to imagine what a town like Chewandswallow would be like to live in.
Sooner or later the conditions get so bad that the Sanitation Department cannot keep up with the weather. A huge pancake has fallen on the school, and meatballs are damaging houses. The town is a mess and the people decide they need to leave. The townspeople build boats out of humongous stale bread and take off for a new land. They arrive in a small town off the coast and decide to settle there. Happy to be out of the mess, they have to adjust to their new lifestyle of buying their food from the grocery store and actually prepare it themselves.
Citizens and worldly tourists in Chewandswallow are blissful until suddenly a large tornado formed of spaghetti and meatballs threatens the town. Flint rushes to his lab to turn the FLDSMDFR off and attempts to send a "kill code" to stop the machine, but the mayor, while trying to stop him by throwing a giant radish at him, accidentally destroys the communication device. With Flint unable to control the machine, a massive food storm is created which threatens the world. When Flint's father encourages him to fix the mess, Flint gains self-confidence, places the kill code in a USB flash drive, and builds a new flying car to reach and deactivate the FLDSMDFR, with the aid of Sam, her cameraman Manny, Steve and Brent (namesake of the Baby Brent Sardine cannery).
Still these characters discover that everyone has something to offer, particularly when they stay true to who they are. And while too much of any good thing can be bad, the forecast for this family film is sunny with a chance of laughs.
