Hi all,
Thanks a lot for everyone who helped out with SFD today. We handed out about 70 ubuntu CD's! I think the day was a great success. Many people learned what open source software is about. More importantly they got to see the quality of open source software for themselves.
Some funny expressions I heard was:
"Oh so linux has buttons to click on, you don't have to type everything?!" "Where can I buy it, how much does it cost? ...Is
all this for free?"
"What is the activation code? ...You
don't need an activation code?!"
I think now is also a good time to start planning for next years SFD. There is still a lot we could improve on. Here are some things I hope we can do better next time:
Someone made the remark "Oh is this all you have for SFD". He
couldn't tell me what more he expected, but I guess he expected it to
be bigger and grander. Any ideas for a bigger grander presentation in
the Neelsie? For next year I will organise some mozilla give aways and order a SFD kit from ubuntu so that we have good looking printed CD's.
Like Steve said, FOSS is about more than just ubuntu or changing operating systems. I think the long term goal would be for people to switch to foss completely, but for some people this is simply to much of a transition. If however they are all ready familiar with firefox, thunderbird, pidgin, openoffice etc on windows, switching to another operating system would be much more seamless. (I've experienced this with my parents).
We should therefore try to get a new version of the OpenCD or compile our own and make a list of each application and why it's usefull. One of OSS strengths is freedom of choice, but it can also be overwhelming. A simple list of recommended programs would therefore help to get people started.
Something else we could have ready by next year is a custom ubuntu cd geared towards maties students. I tried to do this but after installing applications the image was too big. You can however have a startup script which is initialised when ubuntu is installed, this could dowload rescricted-exstras, wine, libdvdcss2 and inetkey from the local servers and install them automatically. It should also be possible to have firefox install with the proxy allready configured (i don't know how yet). If you install maties ubuntu, everything you need as a student should work out of the box.
If you have any ideas or comments please add them...
