My wife (MS Principal) and myself (Secondary Teacher), have been putting a regional Teacher's workshop on for the past 12 years. This summer we had an amazing forum with all of the attendees and one of the round-table discussions was "What advice would you go back and give yourself as a first-year teacher, knowing what you know now". The responses were enlightening & inspiring (and even a bit humorous!). We are challenging teachers to read and set resolutions for a stress-free, productive finish to the school year!
We have posted their advice as a downloadable PDF on our website here: http://www.exceleducationresources.com/DVD_Courses.html

Enjoy!!!

Hi all,

I'm writing to solicit some information on how various institutions award
graduate credit or continuing education credit for teachers who
participate in MTCs, and how much flexibility there is and the associated
cost. If you'd like to respond just to me, I'd be happy to compile the
data to share with everyone. We're struggling with certain aspects of this
at my institution, so I thought I would see how it is working at other
places.

1. Do you award graduate credit for your summer workshop? If so, how
much (and how long is your workshop in hours)? What is the cost from the
university (i.e., tuition)?

2. Do you award continuing education credits for participation in the
summer workshop? If so, what is the cost from the university?

3. Do you award graduate credit or continuing education credits for
academic year participation? If so, which or both? What is the cost?
Are teachers required to attend a set number of sessions? Or can they
receive credit based on their attendance?

4. If you offer continuing education credits, it would be really helpful
if you could describe the process for this at your institution.

Thanks,
Diana

We do not do continuing education credits but would love to offer this as a way to get more people to attend.  It would be great to see any information shared about how other schools were able to get this done.

Hi Diana,
Here are answers. Please feel free to ask if you need more info.

1. Do you award graduate credit for your summer workshop? If so, how
much (and how long is your workshop in hours)? What is the cost from the
university (i.e., tuition)?

...No -- it was deemed too expensive by administration and we have no
funding to cover this.

2. Do you award continuing education credits for participation in the
summer workshop? If so, what is the cost from the university?

...We only award "clock hours". There is no cost for this. (and that's the
reason we can award them).

3. Do you award graduate credit or continuing education credits for
academic year participation? If so, which or both? What is the cost?
Are teachers required to attend a set number of sessions? Or can they
receive credit based on their attendance?

...Again, too expensive for us. We award clock hours for this as well, and
in 2010-2011 (our first year), any teacher who participated in the summer
immersion workshop in August 2010, and also in at least 5 of our 6
meetings received a small stipend -- I think it was $200. It was a way of
recognizing the time commitment they made.
