many of the short forms are for 'FILE EXTENSIONS' like
music files - MP3, MP4, WAV
image files - GIF, JPEG, BMP, PNG
animation files - SWF
text files - DOC, ODT, PDF
spreadsheet - ODS, XLS, XLSX
Presentation files - ODP, PPT, PPTX
These letters are usually added to the file name by the software. (You can see this in your Ubuntu file explorer Nautilus)
Based on this leters, the operating system will decide which program to use to open the file, for eg, using LibreOffice to open a ODT file or VLC Player to open a MP3 file. We should learn what are all the file extensions of different kinds of files and which programs will open them. It will make us comfortable in using different programs
