Subject: annual School Ceilidh - by Maths Soc.?
Hello Daniel, hello Mark, hello Connor, hello Amy,
you are probably aware of the annual Maths. School Ceilidh we have end of October / beginning of November. The last few years it has been at Lutton Place church hall and it has been basically free to all participants. Due to the size of the hall, we limited the participants to members of staff, post-grads, MSc students, and 4th yr undergraduates. If any of you have participated you know it is always a good laugh and a huge success.
In the last few years I have been organising it, which mainly involved booking the hall, fixing the caller and buying juice. The School subsidised the cost of the hall and the drinks with approx 100 Pounds. The music for the Ceilidh was provided by members of staff of the School so was 'free'. A caller was organised from the Uni Ceilidh Soc whom we gave a bottle
as present.
Why am I writing you all this? Well, one of the band and co-organiser (Ken Mackinnon), has suggested that we could try move the School Ceilidh to the Debating Hall in Teviot. It is a larger room and has a much better sound system. However, when I asked about booking the Debating Hall I was quoted a fee far beyond what the School could afford. On the other hand, if you as Maths Soc. booked the hall, it would be free!
So here is my request: could you discuss within the committee of Maths Soc. whether you would want to organise the annual School Ceilidh in future, and whether you would do it along the same lines as in the past, except for doing it in the Debating Hall? If you want to give it a go, then you would need to find out whether you can book the Debating Hall for a suitable evening, I suggest specifically one of the Friday evenings 14th or 21st or 28th October, or 4th Nov 2011. If that works out I can then advise you who
you can ask as caller, and tell the members of the band to pencil in that date in their calendars. Since it would be a Maths. Soc. Ceilidh, you would have to do the advertising (some posters around the corridors of JCMB and some emails, etc.
If you gave it a try and find that the Debating Hall is already booked out, then nothing is lost, I would then just go back to the church hall in Lutton Place, as previously.
Let me know whether you want to try and organise the annual Ceilidh.
Yours, Max
