Hello, all:
I would like to confirm that MathJax has no onboard speech-to-text generator-- correct?  All speech is generated using a screen reader, in other words, and the settings in the Accessibility menu affect only how screen readers present math to users, and not any built-in speech generator.

I haven't found any direct reference to such a feature in MathJax, but I wanted to double-check.

Thanks very much.

Hi Geoff,

From the rest of your message, I'm assuming you mean text-to-spech here.

> All speech is generated using a screen reader, in other words, and the settings in the Accessibility menu affect only how screen readers present math to users, and not any built-in speech generator.

I think that's correct. Technically though, speech text (and braille) can be presented visually as a subtitle but for actual voicing, users need to use a screenreader right now.

That being said, Brian Richwine at Indiana University has built a small script to pass MathJax/SRE speech output to the speech synthesis API. You can read more at https://brichwin.pages.iu.edu/canvasBookmarklets.html. That API still has limited browser support but might be a long term solution for this.

Best,
Peter.

Hi Geoff,

Like Peter I assume that you mean Text-To-Speech capabilities: No MathJax does not generate speech itself.
However, MathJax translates Math formulas to text (English, and a few other languages + Nemeth), which is exposed to screen readers to transform to speech. The text strings that are voiced can also be viewed as subtitles.

Best,
Volker

Hi, Peter and Volker:

You're right-- I *did* mean text-to-speech.  Sorry for the confusion.  Thank you for the confirmation, and also for the link to Brian Richwine's TTS bookmarklet.  He's illustrating exactly what I think is missing from MathJax: built-in speech for anyone who doesn't use a screen reader.  This would be of great benefit to all users.

Thanks again.
Geoff
