math inside an \mbox

hi again davide & group,

MathJax typesets this expression just fine:

$P(\mbox{A and B})$

but this one breaks for me:

$P(\mbox{$A$ and $B$})$

the displayed error is: Missing close braceAandBExtra close brace or
missing open brace

to feel sure, i copy/pasted the expression into a TeX file and it
works OK there... also i infer from another thread (link below) that
math inside of an hbox should work (and i did try an hbox too):

thanks again in advance for any help. probably more boneheadedness on
my part. and since i keep pestering you, i'd like to add that i think
MathJax (and jsMath before it) are brilliant tools.
